165,000 97 WS6 Formula needs a rebuild...
Need advice on best rebuild options for my budget. Work at a dealership and a tech there is gonna rebuild my motor with a little help from me for $30/hr. He said it'll probably take 10-15 hours which sounds decent to me. I've looked at the kits with forged pistons summit has for $589.95. Would that be a good kit? Any better ones for the same price range? Will i need to have the block machined? It smokes a little now and leaks alot. Do i need a new timing set, or would a new chain work? I know i'm about due for a new water pump too. This car needs to be a daily driver for around a year, so reliability is a must. Any kits out there to basically rebuild the heads? Or are they pretty solid? What kind of costs are usually involved in new springs, pushrods, and maybe some good rockers? Would really like several good builds. Trying to keep parts and machine work to around $1500 as i'm sure i'll be paying atleast $500 for labor when all said and done. Thanks in advance.
Need Toyota, Lexus, or Scion parts? Send me a message. I'll match any price within reason plus shipping.

If you want to do a budget build then keep all your rotating assy parts. Get the block inspected to see if it needs a bore or if you can get away w/ just honing the cylinders so you can reuse the pistons. That way all you need are new rings and bearings. That will really cut down on your cost.
YES get a new timing chain AND gears.
You need to get your valves checked to see if they guides are good. To rebuild the heads including rockers you may be looking at upwards to around $1000 if not more. Just depends on what needs to be done. I'd suggest using a machine shop for this.

i second the machine shop part. they might cut you a better deal with machining and assembly. i would call the machine shop and get a quote that way you have an accurate budget for parts.

this is starting to sound real expensive, car is going to need a transmission soon as well and i'm starting to think swapping to an LS1 drivetrain might give me more bang for my buck, am i just crazy? donating the lt1 to my old 89 TA might be a better route. Anyone have a low mileage LS1 drivetrain for around $4000?? How hard of a swap would the LS1 be? I wouldn't think it would be too much. I could probably get by with the hourly guys helping me with that, a couple have LSX cars(one is a 6.0 with LS1 induction in an 89 RX7).

I got a 33K dropout from a '95 Caprice complete from front accessories to computer and underhood harness, 4L60E for $1900 plus $500 for shipping off ebay. Look around.
