I was driving home my '96 trans am and the "service engine soon" light came on. I didn't notice ANYTHING at all. No weird sounds. No roughness. Nada. Any ideas what's up? Could it be a minor maintenance thing... hopefully?

Is it throwing any codes? Could be something simple like a vacuum leak or a sensor going bad.

Where would I see codes? It's a 1996 if that makes any difference.

Go to Advance Auto, they will scan it for free for codes.
My 1998 WS6 T/A, when it was 100% stock for its first 3 years, would pop the SES light on like once a year, it would stay on for about 2-3 days and then go out. The engine/car ran 100% perfectly so I let stay on. I don't recommend you do that of course, since a free scan can be done tomorrow and you'll know what it is.

Ok, so I got it scanned free from this mechanic near my job. The codes that came up were:
P0153 - O2 sensor slow response
P1641 - no translation (anyone know?)
P1642 - also no translation (?)
Is anyone familiar with the untranslated ones?

This is what I found online.
P0153 Oxygen Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
P1641 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Control Circuit
P1642 Vehicle Speed Output Circuit

Can anyone translate the meaning? Obviously I need a new oxygen sensor(s), but what about the other two codes?

no translation came up because those little auto parts stores use generic scan tools. P1xxx are manufacturer specific codes. when you start the car the check engine light should come on and go off as a self check. P1641 comes on if it fails that self test. P1642 could be the speed sensor or the wiring to that sensor.
i'd replace the right front 02 sensor and then if your check engine light is working ignore the second code (as it was probably stored) and then if your speedo seems to be working fine i'd ignore that too (as it was also probably stored).
