Default So what caused my rearend to die..

When I pulled it apart to pull out the stock 2.73's and swap them with a 3.42. My carrier bearings were pitted like as if from corrosion. They had made just a general mess in there but when draining the fluid there was no signs of water in the rear. I've seen bearings wear before but never in this pattern. They just looked like someone tossed them in salt water and left them for 5 years. Common occurrence?

Could have been an over preload condition with the added water in there thinning the oil didn't help matters. How many miles on the rear?

I didn't detect any water in there when draining.. 84k on rear end.. I should take a picture of the rollers. they're pitted and corrodded.
