4.10 gears in
I just got my car home from having new Motive 4.10 gears installed, along with SFC. When I picked the car up, the shop said they painted 8 teeth, shimmed what needed to be, new bearings, etc. and everything was on the money. I drove the car home on the highway and the gears did whine (which they told me it would) but I want to make sure this is 'normal' for new gears. They told me 99% of the time, 4.10s will whine in a 10 bolt. I mean the car pulled nice and I can definitely feel the difference over the stock 3.42 so I'm happy there. The gears only really whine when I'm cruising in lower RPMs; when I'm accelerating or coasting there is virtually no noise. Also, it's not a super loud whine, but I could definitely hear it with the windows up and the radio on. What is the break-in procedure for new gears and can the whining go away over time?

Thanks for the responses guys. I am aware of how the 10 bolt is the weakest link to our cars so I will eventually be upgrading to a 12 bolt or 9in. but that's a whole other topic for discussion. I really don't plan on launching the car at all since it's is nice weather cruiser.... for now The car isn't my daily driver so I guess I can live with the noise. I can always drone the gear whine out with a louder exhaust too.

Mine do the same. No whine during acceleration. Only when cruising a 55-60 do they whine. It's a low whine but you can hear it. 4:10s can be a pain for a DD. Good thing you have another car.

GMMG exhaust with the center mounts, cant go wrong with that. Had SLP before and you cant beat the sound of GMMG. As far as the 4.10 gears, my friend has 4.10s and his doesnt whine at all, but according to everyone I guess it is, idk.
