Default Cleaning out the rear housing...?

I want to clean out the rear end(cars not mine... )
and I want to know what I can spray it with to clean it up, that won't harm anything...?

brake parts cleaner
wd-40
degreaser
...?

I always use brake parts cleaner.

clean out the rear end? A bare empty housing or just removing the rear cover and attempting to do a cleanout with everything still in it?

Yes I'm just going to clean it with everything still in it. Just wanted to look over everything to make sure it's ok then bolt it back up, so I wanted to spray it down to check.
