I went through this and weighed my options for like a month lol. I was looking for the same type of sound you are: aggressive, not obnoxious, but when you get on it turns some heads. Here's what I narrowed mine to:
1. Go to an exhaust shop and see what kind of custom package they can put together for you. This is probably going to be around $500 or so...depending on the shop.
2. Replace the mufflers to Flowmaster 40s, or to go even cheaper some thrush mufflers. Look on youtube, there's a TON of videos of different mufflers.
3. Replace the resonator with a straightpipe. It's not really loud, but definitely gives it an aggressive low tone and cackles when you let off the gas. If you add a downpipe after this it will probably get a bit louder, but not obnoxious.
I went with option 3 and am more than pleased with mine. The car breathes SO much better and sounds great with no interior drone or anything.

Options 4 and 4.5 Install an cut out With stock resonator it sounds good with out much drone except in 4cyl mode at certain load/condition. Or for really loud replace resonator and install cut out.

It's all about the sound you want. Magnaflow is a good sounding, not overpowering system/muffler. Flowmasters "get you noticed" but, imo, don't "sound" great. (bring it on, FM biotches lol)
I have the MF catback and I love to hear it when the wife is driving it away from the house...it sounds good. Not annoyingly loud. Would I like it a little louder? Probably. I drive the car a lot, so I'd enjoy some added resonance in the cabin by way of res-delete, but not sure how the others that are in the car would take to that...esp. on long trips.

I have just a res delete and flowmaster super 44's, got them for 60 bucks a piece shipped from performancepeddler.com the car is quite loud, mine might be a little louder than you're looking for. i can't imagine how it would sound with a catless downpipe The flow 40's are probably you're best bet to be aggressive but not too loud

I'm personally going with Summit Race mufflers to simply replace the stock mufflers. Everything else will stay stock except for 4 inch Magnaflow tips. The mufflers are cheap! Go find my thread on them if you're curious. Should be on the first page.

I can't remember if it's center-in, offset out that you need, or something else. You definitely don't want to match the OE muffler setup, though, since we need the tailpipe bent outward to match the bumper cutouts. W/e you do, make sure you get the muffler to line up with those cutouts, so that you can get some nice, long tips to fit the distance from the outlet to the bumper (like the MBRP tips found in the recent Exhaust Tips section).

I have an 06 SS and I put on Flowmaster super 40's. I like them. You need offset in offset out and 2.25 diameter on the inlet. I got the mufflers for $70 each on ebay. Tips were $40 for the pair and were 2.25 in and 3.5 out 12" long, to give you some I idea.

Why would you want to? They're tiny. I'd recommend finding something "beefier." If you go Off-in/Off-out, to get the outlet lined up with the bumper cutout, you can get some really nice tips in there...such as the MBRP dual-wall stainless tips. Doesn't matter what their inlet size is...you can always go bigger, it's smaller that cannot easily be done.

for your monte, you need 2.25" offset in, center out....
