2004 Grand Prix DTC P0741
Hopefully I'm not out of line posting this in the Front Drives section but I was hoping I could find a little help with my 2004 Grand Prix GT since this is such a tech heavy forum.
Car has a CEL. Read the code and got P0741 - Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) System - Stuck Off. The car shifts and drives just fine. I've read everything from a shorted out wire to torque converter is about to blow up.
Anything I can check myself before heading to the dealership? Fluid was just flushed three or four weeks ago. Car has ~80k miles. Current trans fluid looks fine and is within the correct range. CEL had come on before with the same code. When we took the car in to get the trans flushed the light had already gone out.
Car is worth about $4000 maybe... I'm not putting a $2500 trans in it.
I'd appreciate any help at all. The last thing I need to hear is the trans needs to be dropped and replaced... Thanks.

It could be a bad TCC solonoid too. I have heard of those going bad quite a few times. Try this... While on the highway in 4th gear keep the foot on the gas and tap the brakes. Make sure the car is up to temp 1st. Look to see if the rpms go up, if they do then the torque converter is fine. Let us know.

What does tapping on the brakes in fourth gear do? Is that supposed to release the torque converter? I don't think the car is ever getting into fourth gear right now as it's stuck in the off position.
Thanks for the replies.
