Default o/t pontiac fiero, should i buy?

i found a 1988 pontiac fiero for sale. its an automatic .., 4-tech engine. Has been sitting for a couple years, needs paint, tires, vacuum lines. Headlight motors and alternator were replaced in 2005. New starter in 2006. Has original rims. Bought to fix up but had back surgery and car sits to low so I want to sell car to give it a chance to be fixed. 116,xxx miles. the engine will crank but will dies under 1500 rpm because it needs new vacuum lines. i wont pay over 500. should i try and get it or no?[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

The GT with the V6 is a better choice since the I4 isn't very powerful. Plus it sounds like the car needs a lot of work so you're better off passing on it.

I guess it depends on what you plan to do with it. Personally, it sounds like a turd. Worst thing for a car is to sit for long periods of time. The fact that it sat for 2 years would scare me, even if it's only $500.

Turds=headaches

1988 is the best year GM reverse engineer Lotus suspension for them. SO if you want a good handling car or are going to do a resto/swap I'd say go for it. I'm not real up to date on my fiero stuff but I would think it hard to go wrong on an 88 if you can get it for 4-500...check pennocks fiero forum for some better info.

First thing to do is pop the rear decklid and pull back the corners of the trunk carpet. If they look like this, the rest of the chassis probably has minimal rust:

If you see a lot of rust, then it probably is just a parts car (but still worth 500 if you are an 88 guy - like me!). The 88's are the best year, regardless if it comes with the 4 cyl or the V6... they have the same upgraded suspension (though there is nothing lotus about it). The front is upper/lower A-arm setup with the upper A-arm cross bolt mounted in slotted holes so you can better adjust the camber/caster when lowered (the 84-87 had a fixed upper a-arm cross shaft). The rear is a Tri-link strut type. It has a single link to control fore/aft wheel movement and two lateral links for toe adjustment and lateral loads.

Every panel is bolt on, so you can keep it as a notchie coupe, or convert it to the fastback style

The fieros are great platforms for engine transplants. 2200, 2.0L Turbo, SuperDuty 2.7/3.0, Q4, Ecotec, 3.1/3.4 (and turbo versions), 3.4 TDC (and turbo versions), 3400, 3500/3900 (and turbo version), 3800SC (and turbo versions), 4.3 (and turbo version), 4.5/4.9 Cadillac V8 (and turbo version), N* (and turbo version), SBC/LT1/LT4 (and turbo version), BBC (and blown 455 olds), LS(x) and LS4 (and turbo version) have all been documented over on PFF

if i did an engine swap i would do the s/c 3800 or an ls4. the only thing that worries me is the wiring. i have no experience with wiring . also concerned about trans as well
