You're probably thinking of the engine cover.

nah i guess i need to go pop my hood as apparently i need to look around again since the last time i did was 6 months ago

edit: i take back my previous statement about them being plastic

The L36 valve covers are greyish tan plastic......I had an 01 SS lol.

The valve covers are aluminum and can be polished. I chose to cut the coil mounts off, weld up the holes, smooth them and then paint them:
