Default 243 heads....removing old head gasket

I have pulled one of my heads off of my engine in order to gain acess to a broken exhaust manifold bolt . now I have been cleaning the head mating surface with a rag and laquer thinner. I have been reading much about this and some people say use this tool, some people say o no dont use that use this. its getting really confusing. I understand that my heads and the block are aluminum so im trying to take the most professional approach. It would be nearly impossible to get it much cleaner with just laquer thinner. this is what the head mating surface looks like so far. is this clean enough?

As long as it's smooth you should be good.

Ok, with my finger dragging across the surface it is very smooth. I might just hit a few other spots just to make sure. thanks

Toluene or xylene work a lot better its OK to use a gasket scraper (razor blade) as long as you don't gouge the surface

Use a green and yellow scotch brite pad. Thats what we used on my son's LS1 cylinder head and block. Worked better than the scraping I did before that

well i could do the pads to the head. but on the block I have always read that those are very abrasive and leave particles all over inside your engine and every little crevice they can find. (engine still in car) so far Ive been trying to stick with chemicals first see what i can do

Check out b12 chemtool cleaner for the carbon clean-up. That stuff is amazing. Spray it on, let it soak a minute, then wipe it off. Works like a charm.
