looking at a 2006 ss impala for my daughter. want her to have something cool in high school unlike me. car is on fairfield county craigslist. 40k miles loaded asking 11.5k i know the trannys are weak. but it seems they have a lot more issues. i live in ct so a rear wheel drive car is no good in winter. just wondering what the people who own them think.

might take a look at it tomorrow with her. she really wants my 02 ss le but with 425 rwhp and a yank ss 3600 its way to much for her at 16.

And you don't think 303 hp and 323 lbs/torque is? The highest in power I would get her would be 200 hp/torque. And that's pushing it. Also, you live where it snows.

didn't get a chance to look at it this weekend and saw on craigslist he dropped price to 10500. 300 hp is a lot but my moms rav 4 is 270 and top heavy that she wants. power does scare me and i hoping my kids are much smarter than i was. man when we were young all my friends were crashing cars I'm 50. car has to weigh at least 4k. if i don't get car she wants a truck and I'm worried parking it at school will be a nightmare.

Why does it have to weigh 4K? a smart car weighs like 200 lbs and has one of the best crash ratings out there.

Seriously? It's possible that a smart car fairs well in a single car crash but who is having those? Every crash I've been in involved another vehicle. Whoa! See that semi's front bumper in the rear view mirror.......horror story waiting to happen. Saw a car swerve in front of a semi once, the semi caught it in the drivers door and pushed it down the road before stopping, the car driver had wet pants but survived. A smart car probably would have made a greasy spot on the road. Can you tell I'm not a fan of tiny autos?

Your really tied up on HP ratings.. So at this point I dunno if you want a HIgh HP vehicle, or a safe one, or a big one, FWD, AWD, or what..??

My daughter drove the Imp in high school and then thru college. She has her own tuner (Trinity) and is quite familiar with it`s use. She is very responsible with the car and takes care of every aspect. Yes even changing the plugs and cleaning the induction system. The car is still like new (original trans) and is just passing 174000. She has a perfect driving record. The part about safe cars.. well the insurance companies say it is the safest car on the road and the rates reflect it. One thing she said once just after she was edged for a race and the mustang squawked his tires (one tire fire ) she turned and said " why bother... I don`t have to do that, I already look cool just driving this."
There are responsible people out there, especially if there is a participating parent to boot!
PS with Michelin snows and keeping the wheels cleaned out (snow/ice sometimes fill the inner rim to create an imbalance) it is amazing in the snow/ice

not hung up on horsepower ratings i was just pointing out that the camry and rav 4 v6s come close to the performance of the ss. i guess wanting to live through my kids was bad wording. i should have said i would like them to be happy. they get good grades and work hard so i want to reward them. its fun for me to hang out with her and talk cars. most of her friends don't know what an ss is. if it makes her fell good to have what she thinks is a cool car ill support her. if she can't be responsible ill take it away.
