Nope, your understanding it correctly, LS4 was specifically designed with a bell housing bolt pattern to match the 3800 engine, thats why we cant swap in other LS motors with the RWD bolt pattern, but we can use the 4t80e and other various FWD transmissions, they all use the same pattern.

Didn't realize that I guess. I thought there were LS4 specific transmissions. That still doesn't help me though, because I still need something that had TapShift. FML lol

You have to put in your Vin when you order it, they should know. I would still call and confirm before it ships.

I did confirm with The Transmission Authority (company who makes the re-manufactured transmission I'm looking at on Rock Auto) that the transmission they have listed will work with my car. I guess that's the route we're gonna go. All I need to retain the 3yr unlimited mileage warranty is a licensed repair shop install it and they'll pay for the labor if it goes out again. I will probably not mess with doing a shift kit on it just to make sure I don't upset their warranty stuff. I will install a cooler and see about getting a trans tune though. Fingers crossed this all goes well.

Won't bolt to the LS4 will it?
Looks like you know what your doing moving forward.. The Comp G trans options, you would have to contend with figuring out the starter - unless someone knows better, only Grand Prix GXP got the LS4 (trans mounted starter) ?? I picked up an 05 Comp G parts car cause it's Tap shift but has 3800SC...

If you do decide to try and dump the car, drop me a PM - I'd be interested at that price

Good luck !!

Got the transmission delivered in 3 days and installed. Core return was as easy as printing off a piece of paper and dropping it off at the shop. Core shipping paid for by the transmission company. Everything is going well so far, but only ~50 miles on the car. License ran out while it was parked so I need to get it renewed so I can drive it again. I can already say that it runs like a completely different car. I guess I didn't realize how bad of shape my transmission was in.

I would really love to get a tune for it soon, it still does a lot of unnecessary shifting in high gear and TCC lock and unlock stuff when the DOD can't make up it's mind what it wants to do. That's all if I do decide to keep the car. I love it and want it to last, but I feel like I'm driving a ticking time bomb since I have become aware to the issues these cars have with transmissions.

Excellent. Make sure to try the tap shift if you have not already. Did you install yourself or have someone do it? Post the total if you would, I think it is the best option out there price wise. And for 600 core I would have kept that if I was keeping the car.
