What is the least expensive option to replace the 5.3. I havent decided what I will be doing now that I have oil pressure issues but if I have to pull the motor with 315k miles on it, I may consider replacing it. Several auto part stores want nearly 6k for a long block rebuild and I don't think I'll be paying that. Dealer wants nearly 4k, better option but I'd rather pay less. Anyone have any good sources or other options?? Thought about buying entire auction car with the 5.3, pull the motor and trash the car for scrap but you never know what you'd get......

If your mechanicly inclined I would just pull the motor aND tear it down and take it to a local shop to have new bearings installed and any machine work done.

Depending on your location you can get a junkyard block for a decent price. Mine cost me $1800 because it was the only one running within 250 miles lol. It was a longblock with 38k on the clock. Turned around and sold the 243s for $400 so it wasn't too bad.

Just missed a junkyard LS4 and trans for $1400 on my local CL. Had I known you needed an engine and I needed a trans, we could have split that. Only reason I didn't buy it was because I didn't want to mess with ditching the motor.

If you have a 05-06 car you'll need a 05-06 LS4 or if your car is 07-09 you'll need an 07-09 LS4 just as a heads up.

315,000 miles is impressive numbers you drive so damn much I would suggest you get 2 cars.. one car to commute with and then keep your LS4 as your weekend car... no?

are there any shavings in the pan? and is it saying you have low oil pressure or was it checked mechanically. I had that issue and all it was is the OPS on the fritz. if you really need a rebuild this is an easy engine to learn. get a book or a dvd and have at it, save at least 3 grand.

And the reluctor wheel. 05-06 uses a 24x and 07+ uses a 58x.

If all you are wanting is a basic long block, no aftermarket frills, I have a source I've used in the past with great results. They have three versions of the 5.3, ranging from $1700 - $2700. You will pay a $400 core charge, but you get that back when it is returned (shipping back to them is included in the shipping quote - which was reasonable). Their long blocks come with a 12 month warranty too. At their prices it might be worth it to you to spend a few hundred dollars more to get a fresh rebuild with a warranty. When the 5.3 in my Suburban finally goes (240k and counting) I will be buying my long block from them, my fourth purchase with them.

They are not part of the LS community, so I'll PM you their information if you want to check them out. Feel free to call them, they have always been very helpful to me with any questions I have had.

No shavings, have checked mechanically. Normal pressure above 1k RPM, abnormally low below 1k.
