Default 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP DOD removal

Hey all,

I've been doing a lot of research but I can't quite seem to find what I'm looking for. I'm driving a 2005 pontiac grand prix GXP and it's my daily driver.

1)I have a couple of dead lifters that are making my car sound like crap. I wanted to replace them with non-dod lifters. I already have the dod tuned out of the car, and am just wondering what it would take to get the wacky lifters out.

2) I'd like to eventually do a complete dod removal/ cam swap just to get the crap out of the car, but I'm not exactly sure what it would take to do it. Most of the threads I have seen are for track cars, and builds running nitrous etc., and like I said, I'm just using it as a daily driver. It's a fun car I like it a lot. Not looking for crazy hp increases, just something to make the car sound a little nicer and run a little better. Wouldn't mind spending extra to do it right.

Cheers!

Like all LS engines, the cylinder heads have to be removed to do the AFM delete. It's a good idea to do it the same time you decide to upgrade your cam, and valve train.

Alright, do you know if there'd be any problems if I just change out the DOD lifters with non-DOD lifters without replacing anything else?

Change out the lifters, new gen IV (non DoD) valley cover, and tune out DoD. You do not have to replace any other DoD part like the cam or oil pump.

There are several threads on several different sites that state cam change is a must. Oil pump is good to go.

No need to replace the cam. The DoD lobes vary very slightly. So little that you can probably use the same size pushrod on all lobes. However going to all of that work I would recommend camming it but that's just personal preference.

Your post from gmls4.com

LS7 lifters are the OEM replacement. You can use a different oil pump, I am. If you're doing a DoD delete I highly suggest you get rid of every DoD part, including the cam. If you do a search for DoD delete while keeping stock cam you'll find it causes issues. I didn't research when I did mine and deleted everything but the cam and got misfires while driving it afterwards and about 100 miles later my block seized up. That's just my .02 though.

A needle bearing is what caused my failure, I just never went back to edit that post. 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP DOD removal-photo339.jpg

First off, I'm not trying to argue, I know sometimes thread discussions can come across that way.

So what caused your miss after a 100 or so miles?

Are the LS4's different from the other engines with DOD?

I have heard of some engines (non ls4) not needed the cam changed and others that have dead misses on the DOD cylinders, and others somewhere in between.

How did you get a needle bearing in there?

I'm assuming I got a bad new lifter. How it got in my oil channels is still a mystery. It's too big to fit through the pick up tube and the filter should've caught it as well.
