Default 160 or 180 degree thermostat

has anyone replaced thier thermo and been successfull with it. I talked to a place and they said dont go 160 because the computer will stay in warm up mode and run bad, only go 170!!

Also, has anyone tried the 93 no dod tune and filled up with 91 or 92 (since that is all we have around here) but before fill, put a gallon and a half of 100 oct. in it to boost it to 94????

any problems with this?

There is a thread somewhere here where someone determined we have ... i wanna say a 184 thermostat or something like that.

That said, I think Badd and a couple others did a 160.

I have a 160* on my Z, but that is a summer only car. LS1 programming on that car allows me to turn on the fans real low (thinking 170ish, did it a couple years ago). The old theory on the 160 is to run the engine colder as a cheap way of bumping the fuel and spark trims. I read in several places the LS2 based programming doesn't allow you to turn the fans on below IIRC 195*, so why bother? This is also my D/D, so I need all the "heat" I can get when it hits 5 below a few times a year. You also can't keep the windows from icing @ highway speeds in these cars anything below 10 above. SLP had a kit to turn the fans on manually on the F-bodys, so you may be able to use it if it's still available.

On the 93 tune Dave - the 93 tune pushes the ECM parameters to the upper limit of the spectrum, assuming that you won't get knock. Obviously running 91 or 92 will in fact kick the floor out of the 93 tune.

And yes, gasoline octane level is the average of mixing, so you could do the long math to find out exactly how much 100 octane you would need. BUT - my understanding is some companies mix in additives to achieve higher octane levels, some are very bad for the components and sensors on the vehicle.

I'd be VERY afraid of adding any gas from that rusty white pump on the side lot of a mom and pops gas station in my nice new car. Who knows what kind of rust crap is coming out of that pump that was made before you were born ...

That's why I also only fuel up at an Amoco (now BP), Marathon or Shell dealer. Amoco and Marathon are confirmed 93 octane premium, if you can find a Sunoco they have 94 octane. I also only use the 3 hose pumps, so I know the thing is full of 93, not the 87 that the last person dumped into their minivan.

Are you talking about the Diablo Tune? I thought it was a 91 octane tune.

yeah I know, I usually get 93 oct. from BP. But the tune on the Diablo says "91 octane no DOD" it doesn't say 93 octane.

Funny - I was at my parents over the weekend w/ dial-up, so I couldn't reply. On a 15" monitor it looks like a lot! I type on my 17" XPS lappy, takes up less than 1/3 of my screen!

No - what I meant to say is you don't want to run 91 oct gas with the 93 tune. Just like the owner's manual states about how you can run 87 or 89 octane in the 5.3, but with diminished power.

On the racing gas - should be clean, but get the names of the chemicals in it to your dealer to verify it won't F-up your engine. You spent big $$$, ask the questions befor you dump it in!

I haven't programmed mine yet, but more than likely will this summer. I need gas milage help.
