Default Went To The Dealer For Tranny Issue

Well I finally brought my car to the dealer for the slip/shudder at the 1 to 2 shift at WOT I was posting about a couple weeks ago. They just called me and said they are replacing the 1 to 2 clutch pack. They also said they are going to replace my ISS for the clunking noise many of you guyys speak of. I've honestly never really noticed it but am happy they are replacing it because I think my car is an early 06 model and read that GM just fixed the ISS issue. They also told me my brakes were pulsating and will fix that as well, all under warranty. Glad I caught it under warranty (31,000), my last GM, 2001 Camaro Z28, went 32,000 used and abused miles without ever needing any warranty work. I miss that car.

Torque converter? Why is it part of the problem or just destined for failure?

I've had bad experience with 4t65... When a dealership cracked mine open it was non stop problems until the whole thing was replaced. But my current monte carlo hasn't had problems yet but the way i drive it i'm sure there will be soon. Im about to hit 31k!!!!!!

Could the torque converter really be part of the shuddering problem? I've had the 2nd gear clutch replaced on my car as well, and the shudder is still there slightly. The converter seems to be fine otherwise, although is kind of sluggish to lock up.

Also, could anyone tell me what the TSB says about the convertor?

Make sure / tell them to drop the pan and check for metal shavings in it. Sometimes the burnt packs are a secondary failure. First the chain on the trannie stretches, starts grinding and spits out little metal shavings that get into the fluid and then the gear packs burn out. Common issue with GXPs at least. Mine did that to me at 31k.

Ideally try to get an entirely new transmission out of them if you can swing it.

What were the syptoms on your car? Was it the shudder on the 1st to 2nd gear shift. I think I should look into an extended warranty on this car. I like it a lot but can't afford to have tranny issues after 36,000 miles passes.

I caught the 2nd and 3rd gear version of the problem. Basically a shudder an a bit of clunk when the car when from 2nd to 3rd gear. After three weeks of this second gear just dropped out for me.

The deal is second gear is normally to blame and the 2nd gear pack has been subject of many TSBs. So I think you basically have the 1st and 2nd gear version of the same problem.

My understanding is when the problem is occuring early and the packs haven't been fully burnt out on many mechanics will just replace the gear packs, not noticing that the chain has stretched and the trannie is filling up with metal shavings. So I'd lobby to have your dealer drop the pan and check your fluid for metal shavings. If he sees any basically tell him to hook you up with a new transmission and make sure he flushes your fluid a few times. One genius dealer didn't fully flush the system so the metal shavings just chewed the new trannie to crap.

Thanks for the info Area, I wasnt aware the converter could cause the shudder. I could buy a reman one from Dean's for like $150, I think I may do that eventually
