Default My ambitious project

Finally got around to installing an LS6 cam in the Monte... Had to have my buddy Brad zip loosen the crank pulley bolt for me today when it was in earlier for some warranty work

Basically this involved lifting the body away from the K member a good 6 inches to get the cam out under the frame rail.

The hardest part was getting the PS pump and water pump off the front of the motor by far.

But its 80% back together now. The cool part is this cam will still allow the DOD to function correctly too.

What is the difference in duration etc between the LS4 cam and the LS6 cam? Just wondering what the overall change was going to be, great pictures, and hope it turns out well!!!

I will get it finished up tonight and dial it in and give some *** dyno reports for now. I will shut off the DOD for the initial dial in, but i will turn it back on after just to see what happens, worst it could do is bottom out the lifters, makea bunch of noise and open the valves thus negating the system. I couldnt find anywhere if nighthand tried the DOD after the LS2 cam?

My estimates are gonna be around 20 hp too, being the intake neck by far is the biggest restriction in the system aside from the rear header collector. The heads and CR are pretty condusive to decent power. 300whp GTP's seems have no issue going mid 12s @ 108ish, thats all im after.

For argument sake...

01- LS6 cam specs

207/217 @.050" .525"

LS2 Cam specs

204/211@.050" .525"

The diff in duration could be as much as a 10 hp diff or so between them...

Well it works! I think its gonna need some longer pushrods (ls6 cam has smaller base circles due to longer valve stems) but none the less you can really feel the difference all over the power band. It feels funny at WOT cuz the torque steer is now somewhat annoying and its a little soft on torque after the 1-2 @ 60 mph but comes right back with a quicker speedo sweep than before.

Once i get the valve train quieted down ill get it to the track on slicks.

The stock airbox is all cut open behind the headlight, more of a non modded look if anyone wants to see under the hood after a race lol on the *** dyno it feels better than the fenderwell one i had in there prior.

Have not tried the DOD yet, but i did get it dialed in. Its actually pulling down 28-30 on instant econ in V8 mode cruising at about 60 with this cam, where it was in the low 20s prior, i guess the 116 LSA helped that.

it appears as though a 7.425" pushrod is what will be needed for those wondering. Got a set on the way. I think correcting the sloppy valvetrain issue will boost torque to where it once was.

I had 1.8s in there previously, so they are a carry over.

This is an 01' LS6 cam, so it has only .525" lift. that comes to .556" at the valve with a 1.8 rocker.

The DOD lifters only cares about the lift at the cam. Because when the lifter "free wheels" for lack of better words, its gonna depend on how much free travel the lifter has to whether it can accomodate the added lift. So if the lifters can take the added .046" in lift internally the system should operate the same.

I want to correct the pushrod length issue first before i kick the DOD back on.

Amazing how much of a bump in instant fuel econ at a cruising speed in V8 mode between the 2 cams, i cant wait to see what it does with the DOD working.
