Default 5w-20 anyone?

The car i just bought came with 5 qts of 5w-20 mobil 1 fully synthetic in the back and im thinking of changing the oil with this stuff. Usually i run 10w-30, but im thinking about running this stuff just for about 500 easy miles or so during clutch break in, and then switching back to 10w or 5w-30 mobil 1. anyone see any problems with this? I just don't want those 5qts to go to waste if its not going to do any harm.

I would NOT run anything less than 30w. Some guys run 0w30, I run 20w50 in my stroker.

you need to run oil wt per bearing clearances. 5-30 or 10-30 for "stock" motors.

My 383 runs 20-50 per builder specs

I do have a 2009 Ford which runs 5-20 per owners manual

If you are taking it easy I see no harm. Otherwise you could use it up one quart at a time mixed with whatever weight you normally prefer. I have not checked recently but the M1 10w-30 used to be so thin it was practically a-20 anyway.

first number is only cold start viscosity. it's still a 30 weight oil just like 5 or 10w30. Personally with a stock motor I wouldn't use the 5w20.

Agreed, that's why I said 30w min, because first number does not matter per say.

I was reading lots of people praising that german stuff, and I thought some were even running 0w-20... Which, wouldn't that basically be the same as the 5w-20 (aside from the cold start thickness). I still don't fully understand the oil ratings, so these are sincere questions.

the only german flavor of castrol syntec is 0w30....

essentially yes a 0w20 and a 5w20 are in the same accepted viscosity range for 20 weight oil. One might be thinner than the other depending on formulation, hence why it's a given range not an exact amount.

For example 0w30 German Castrol is 12.1 CST @100C. Another xxW30 oil might be 11.0 CST @ 100C. Still within the range of being a 30 weight oil..

i've looked over Dr. Haas article before. What I and others already stated doesn't say anything different than what he's saying.
