Default anyone done this to a stock flexplate?

I noticed a lot of noise coming from the torque converter area. I pulled the transmission and luckily I got to it before it exploded. I just dont understad, i torqued them in sequence and to spec. Wondering if Its a freak deal and do another OEM one, or upgrade to a tci?

There are threads on here of stockers doing this. I thought the LS1 guys had a lot of trouble with them? Search the whole site, not just the LT1 section, I'm sure you will find more.

I did, it looks like a couple of years of the ls1s had problems. The reason Basically im trying to decide if i need to upgrade, the flexplate I broke was a year old and was under warranty but if this is a common problem ill just upgrade.

I had one crack in a circle around the bolt holes before. Luckily I caught it before anything happened. It was not making any noise either.

Geeze, makes me wonder if I have the stocker on mine or not. I know my motor has been yanked before, as well as the tranny, but who knows :\ I won't be able to check for a long time, and by then I'll forget So I just cross my fingers now and hope it's not factory Hopefully I'll remember to at least look when I get around to putting my trans back in!

Flex plates have been breaking like that for a long time now. Most people w/ that problem think they have spun a bearing or have blow there motor.

Speed Inc has an SFI approved one for $120 if I remember correctly. It has the provisions for 4l60e and TH transmissions. It's a great price if you compare it to the TCI one.

If the crank bolts were all tight... Your bellhousing to block bolts probably were not. That's the only way I've ever seen them crack. And I've seen it quite a bit.

well..I tightened the bell housing bolts with a 1/2 inch mac impact. And all of the crank bolts were tight. I just think it was a weak flexplate like most. Ill just have to upgrade.

Not saying your wrong. That probably is a cause of a lot of them. Just wasn't the case for me! thanks for the input!

You shouldn't have used an impact. You should have used a torque wrench. Did you use a torque wrench on the flywheel bolts or the impact?

no no lol i would never use an impact on the flywheel bolts. I use the impact and a long extension for the bell housing bolts.

I cracked one on a 383 stroker/700R4 combo once after a high rpm thrash. Blew the nose off the starter next time I tried to start it, and cracked the outside bolt hole in the block. Couldn't ever start it after that because the starter would deflect even after replacing the flex. Done with autos!
