Default Thanksgiving Present II - Install! with pics

well today i finally got the chance to install my new valve train. pretty much just 1.6 NA comp cams RT rockers, and comp cams 918 beehives! this was my first time ever installing valve springs so it was abit of a learning curve for me. but with the right tools and the help of all of you it was a breeze! here are some pics.

Comparison stock and the 918's

Trickflow's hardened 7.200" pushrods and cleaned up stock ones

it took about an hour and a half per side to replace the valvesprings using the air through the spark plug method. i made sure to clear up the pedestal's for the guideplates.

Ahhh i love letting my rockers sit in be... i mean 10w-30

setting valve lash.

ALL DONE!

there not even that loud. you can hear them alittle from inside the car but i dont mind.

the installation from first tear down of my strut support bar to have it go back took me about 9 hours. including lunch and some relaxing breaks for my back. everything went without a hitch. i had to finish today so im very happy. a special thanks to NightTrain66 for giving me all the part #'s needed for everything to work right and for all of you who helped giving me advice and ideas. i couldnt of done it without you guys. a special thanks to the tools i used lol best $60 i ever spent.

the hose was originally 1 piece but it was way to long for me to really get it into the spark plug wires so i put a male/ female JIC on either end to make it alot easier to get it in.

as for performance i cant really say as of yet because im still letting everything settle in. but i gave it te gas cruising in 3rd abit and it sounded deeper and it put me back in my seat real well! im very happy!

I need to do my rocker swap sometime soon too. I've got my 1.7's, 918 beehives, and other misc. valvetrain stuff just sitting in a box in the back of my car. The shop said they wanted to take the heads off to do it. So, I said screw it, I'll do it myself, since I've already got about $600+ in parts. lol. I don't need to spend another fortune to get the motor dropped and the heads pulled to get it done.

actually the spring compressor i used worked out real well. it was just time consuming. couldnt do it fast. but in the end it worked out real well.

yeah man you dont have to go through all that crazy ****. it just takes time. if you have a garage that you can leave it in over night its no problem. just be patient and make sure all the valves are closed and your good to go!

oh if i had stock manifolds i wouldnt be doing it for 2 reasons. the first theres no point and secondly itd be Impossible to reach the spark plugs!

well performance wise. its low end is stronger, highway cruising in 5th it pulls really nice. and its Alot smoother then the stock setup. its just alittle louder due to the guideplates and what not. but idc about that. i love it. except for the fact that i didnt replace the stupid valve seals i didnt even know that there was anything there (yes im a cylinder head noob) so now i have oil burning ioff in my exhaust which means i have to pull off all the springs agian and put new ones on. other then that its great! lol :\

does anyone know what part # to use for new valve seals ?

The Crane tool is the ****. You can do two at once with that thing. Those jaw style ones are absolutely horrible. Not to mention they nick the springs causing premature fatigue and stress points.

there is a guy on here that makes a spring compressor. you can only do one but its fairly cheap. and it has great reviews. i will be purchasing one this week when i re-do my springs to save my wrists and not deal with that screw style compressor ever again

heres the thread https://ls1tech.com/forums/tools-fab...available.html

Don't even need to use air for the cylinders. Just follow firing order for TDC and use the piston to support the valve while you change everything. I'd also recommend a dynamic lashing; more accurate IMO.
