355 or 383
This winter i am planning to start to build a new motor for my 96 Formula M6. the main reason for the build is coming up next august im going to be livin in germany near the autobahn to really test the car, but also my engine now has 129,000 hard miles on it. i have come to two different options which i dont no which to choose: a blown 355 or a fully built 383. does anyone know of any advantages of each or which one might be better for a "weekend warrior"?
Thanks for any advice you may have, Adam

im not sure how you are comparing a blown 355 to a built 383? too many variables. i would still go forged 355 if you are gonna put any serious boost on it. in that case a built 383 will be basically the same in cost as a 355 minus a lil extra machine work for the 383. in that case you are also spending more for a better fuel system to feed the blower, and the blower will also add another 5-6k on top of your build cost. there are just too many variables to say

Comparing a blower car to a NA car isnt really fair.
I built a 383, with a "monster heads and cam" package, and a nice big shot is in her future. On motor, the blower car is going to pull on a simple NA 383. Shot vs Blower, then its a fair game.
The bottom line is, its cheaper to build a NA motor and spray it. Until you break it ;-)

Even if its blown, it still needs to be built strong to handle the load, when building anything, if funds are there, go as BIG as you can on the cubes, no substitute for cubic inches, then add what you want.

If you first take the blower out of it, consider this:
A 383 will have longer rods, therefore it will produce more torque than the 355. A 355 will rev quicker and higher than the 383 because of the shorter stroke. Both engines will need to be forged. Depending on whether you select a 5.7" rod or a 6.0" rod, the 383 may require more machining ($$) to accomodate the longer stroke.
A F/I 355 will always beat a N/A 383, just basic physics of how F/I works. It will also be more expensive due to all the extra parts it will require. And the F/I will have to be sized to the volume of the engine; in my case, I would need a larger turbo if I went 383. In your case, you would need a different supercharger, say P-1SC vs. D-1SC (if you went Procharger). This is assuming, of course, that you went with a supercharger, which is the F/I that works best with your M6.

More than half the people that build "blown" cars end up with shitpoor slugs. They don't take the time to tune 'em and get pushed around by N/A cars day in day out. I've seen more than I can keep count.
Building a boost car takes time, dedication, and most important... $$$.
That being said, my 355 has served me well.
