Default FYI: Header Insulation Engine Compartment Temps

I thought you guys would appreciate this. This was a college project for my Energy Systems class. We had a $50 budget. By no means is this identical to real headers, but it does give a good indication of the temperature over time.

Yeah, that is why I think engineering is so fun. You get to design/build things for real life situations.

It was a shock to us that the header wrap and ceramic coating didn't increase the exit flow temperature. This means they could be robbing horsepower from really high horsepower cars because a lower temperature means lower exhaust velocity (bad).

question did you coat the inside of the pipe with the ceramic coating ? All ceramic coatings applied to headers are done to the inside and outside.

With regards to the ceramic coating, that would seem to contradict most real world tests I've ever seen. I would also be interested in knowing whether the inside of the pipe was coated.

Based on the pics, I'm guessing the inside of the pipe was not coated.

Another question would be whether that coating is comparable to a coating supplied by someone like Jet-Hot.

The inside of the pipe was not coated for this test.

I doubt the coating is anything like Jet-Hot. It was really hard to apply the coating with a brush, we did it like 5 times because it was very thin. This is the product we used: http://www.nomorerust.com/highheat/

So if anyone is thinking of using this product on their headers....I would NOT! It is garbage unless maybe spraying it.
