Default rear end ?

will a m6 3.42 center section fit in a 2.73 a4.are the axles the same.thanks

Yes, the carrier + Ring and Pinion will all fit from 82-02 models (however there might be an axle spline difference so stick with 93-02). The posi unit will NOT work with your 2.73s though, you'd need the little adapter-spacer ring-a-mabob .

i want to change the carrier and to a 3.42 gear.

Will work just fine, make sure you get the pinion gear too. Not sure what kind of driving you do, but if you don't do a ton of track time, the 99+ rears use Torsen posi. I prefer it over the clutch style, but according to people on here they don't hold up as well if you do a ton of drag racing. The one benefit though is that since it's newer, it'll have less miles
