Default Picking up my Project LT1 thurs, 4 N20 build

Well Ive decided to start my N20 Build. I want a bullet proof bottom end that will survive high revs and 200 shot or more.
I was going to start with a blown up motor and work from there. I scraped that idea, Because I found a perfect running complete LT1 out of a wrecked 97 TA with 22k on it.
I got a good deal on it and it was exactly what I was looking for. So I bought it for 500
Once the short is done all the stuff on my car will be swapped over.
Top end is already good too go!

Now the question is where do I start?????????????

How big should I go and whats the difference in price????????????

What pistons,crank,rods,bearings,Etc???????????

How much to have splayed caps installed etc...???????

All the help I can get would be great! This will be my first real bottom end build!

Im not in a rush since I just got my car together but...... maybe just maybe it will go alot faster with some help and killer deals!!! Thanks for reading my long *** post!

Not much help but that is what i plan on doing sometime also by picking up a low mile lt1 from an f-body or one from a vette with 4-bolt mains. If i go with the 2 bolt it will get splayed 4-bolt mains. I can't decide on either a 355 to handle one or two big shots of the juice and about 7500rpms or a nice 383 or 396 built to handle the same ammounts of spray. I'll be keeping an eye on your build to see what you go with!

G/L with your build man!

For some reason Im thinking a 355, but depends on the extra cost to go up to 383/396

how much are you trying to spray? Do you plan on buying a crank or not?

well if your going to buy a crank a 383 is a no brainer. It will be about the same price as a 355 just a little more for clearancing the block. I would recommend Callies crank H beam rods and a mahle, je, weisco, diamond piston. Splayed caps wont be a bad idea. Cr is up to you. A 200 shot really isn't that much i was spraying a 175 hit on a 154,000 short block weekly for a while before it let go a rod bearing. So what does that tell you about stock internals strength.

yeah but im already making 414 rwhp and 200+ on top of that wont last forever on stock internals
I would use the crank for a 355 though. I never heard of a stock crank breaking.

machine shop here charged 750 for splayed mains. that was with me providing pro-gram caps and him drill/tap, align bore/hone. ive noticed his labor rate is higher than alot of other shop quotes posted on here but the quality is well worth it. also went with a lunati sledgehammer crank, lunati promod 6" rods, and ross pistons. i have a thing about buying american where i can. good luck with the build.

750!!! to have it splayed or that and align bore??

when i priced machine work out for my 383 for everything it was around 1850. and that includes installing the rings in the pistons and all. but if your only planning to spray a 200 shot lik me eagle and scat products will do just buy the forged parts. go 383. in my block were goin eagle forged crank and 6" hbeam rods and then a set of JE pistons. our plan is also to build a bulletproof 383 to handle a 200+ shot. only thing is moneys tight. glad to see your goin BIG. will it be done for the shootout?

imo if you're just talking about a bolton car with 200 shot, stock rods and crank should be fine, just upgrade the pistons

then again make sure your tune is pretty dead on

Didnt he say something about the car is 414rw already?

If so I would build a strong bottom end. I would not re use the stock rods because by the time you clean them up, put arp fasteners in there you could get some I beams. So if you plan is a 355 I woud go stock crank, decent i beams, good pistons, 4 bolt main, arp hardware, good bearings.

A 200 shot is border line when you may want to go nitrous piston? Especially if that 200 grows to a 225 or 250. What type of n2o kit are you going to use?

With rpm's and n2o your bottom end will need to be sound. If you take the cheap way out you may end up paying later. Goodluck

My 383 has splayed caps, Callies crank, DiamondStar rods (?), Mahle pistons etc. 200 shot on it but never sprayed it since it has a SMOKING problem. I went with the spayed caps and the the better parts just so I wouldnt have any issues when I want to use the 200+ shot of go-go juice.

Dont skimp, its apart now so do it the "right" way so it doesnt have to come apart again

With the splayed caps the only issue I ran into is I cant get a dip stick back in. It was only like $150 to have them installed

It was $150 to have splayed caps and all the machine work done? I was right around $1200 for my callies caps and machine work done by Dave DiLuca.

Thanks guys all the pricing really helps!!!!
I plan on starting with about 200 shot. Then just keep going up from there. This car WILL go 9s or better. Still looking at different kits.
No I dont plan on having it ready for the shootout. So Im gonna run the car pretty much as is. There are way to many other things Ill need to run 9s at the shootout. Like a license, safety/cage,slicks,fuel system, the N20 kit etc.

you need to have 2 licensed nhra drivers watch you make passes and i believe you have to make 3 full 9 second passes in a row. and then the two guys will sign off on it. might be more to it that i forget
