what viscosity of oil are people running out there
there is a controversy on other sites as well to which viscosity to run in either the ltx or lsx engines.....just say you have a cam and bolt ons or even a H/c/i car....what oil are peeps running and why do run that weight of oil??
im sure this will answer many of this sites questions of which oil to run for there combo!

I run 20/50 in my ls6 per GM recomendations and 10/40 in my 224/230 cammed but stock lt1.
I think the theory is, if your spinning high RPMs over a long period of time, you want a thicker oil to keep those fast parts lubricated. So unless your spinning 7k on a roadralley course, 10/30 is fine. I would go 5/30 if it was winter.

You are going to get bad info here, just like every other oil thread.
I don't feel like typing out why you are all wrong at the moment so search for previous posts, hell there was one in the last few weeks.
The M1 everyone gets a hardon for is mediocreat best IN THESE ENGINES, still a quality product, just missapplied.

I have a rebuilt 355 with a CC306 and my engine builder told me to run a straight 40weight Valvoline for the first 1500 miles the told me to switch to Mobil 1 15-50 synthetic.

winter i run a 5w/30 and in the summer irun 10w/40 due to out side temps. i`ve done this for years winter the lighter oil will get up top faster and summer the heavyer oil does thin out as fast under the heat here in the good ole south. this may not trulymake a diff but i feel more comfortable

oil viscosity should be dictated by builder (which every new engine is specified) or by the "builder". It is based on engine machined tolerances with other contributing factors.
Many rebuilt engines are set up to run 20-50 as a result of wider bearing clearances and increased oil system flow provided by HV oil pump. Running that weight oil in a "stock" motor, IMHO, is not a good idea.
Dyno vs. Synthetic is yet another debate

I run 10w40 in the hot months and 5w40 in the colder months of the summer. This is a stock internals LT1. I think 30w oils are too thin for small blocks, but that's just me and my experiences. One of the big oil pressure and ultimately engine killers is the oil cooler because it traps so much crap. Once again, my opinion, but just a word of advise. Always listen to your engine builder and they will guide you in the right direction.

Double digit posts and still looks like I am the only one who has done any meaningful research on the topic.
MEASURED RESULTS, which means so little to you all, shows a specific 0w-30 to be the best for an LT1 or LS1 and believe it or not it is THICKER than the popular 5w-30 and 10w-30.

Just out of curiosity... How is a 0w-30 weight oil thicker than 5 or 10w-30 rated oil?? I mean, they have the same viscosity at operating temps but before wouldn't it be much thinner. Are you referring to a specific brand or something?

You guys are proving my point about how much bad information there is out there.
Far as the thick 0w-30 I am refering to a specific one but other specific brands are thick too.
First people need to largely ignore the first number, then they need to understand the second is a RANGE not a precise measurement.

I don't actually drive the car in the winter, but start it and warm it 2-3 times during the winter, so I put 5W-30 in it at that time. In the summer, I used 10W-30 for the first 12 years I had the car, but this past summer, tried a load of 10W-40, to see if it would quiet the Comp 875R lifters. (it did, slightly)
