Default what timing chain to go with

im in the middle of putting a cc306 cam in my car and was thinking about getting the stock chain out and replacing it with a bigger chain. should i do that? and if so what chain should i use. also the stock chain has 40,000 miles on it and its a 94.
thanks

Just stick to a new OEM timing chain and sprocket. No need to invest into the Double roller/HD chain.

GM # 10128349 (sprocket)
GM# 10128485 (chain)
GM# 101228346 (CRANKSHAFT SPROCKET)

If you are replacing the chain, replace the whole timing set, not just the chain. You can get a LT1 replacement timing set, or some opt for the LT4 HD chain.

What's the advantage of doing the whole kit? Do the sprockets warp or something?

They wear down over time from the chain. I just replaced mine with 68k on it and it looked to be in great shape. Better to do it all at the same time as inexpensive as it is.

The chain and sprockets wear together, no sense in throwing on a brand new chain on worn sprockets. You will accelerate the wear on the new chain. While you might be able to get away with it, I wouldn't recommend it, it's a peace of mind thing.

+1 There is really no need for a heavy duty chian set. I have heard stories of them actually breaking. Stick to the OEM version as mentioned

I have heard that this is a good product:

Lunati Timing Set
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4&autoview=sku

Probably just as good as the OEM replacement timing set, which should be sufficient for 99% of applications.

If he's gonna stick to a single roller just get the stock GM chain. Proven reliable and they are like 35 bucks through GMPARTSDIRECT

Well the Lunati set is only 10 bucks more. If there's no rush, the OEM set from GMpartsdirect would be your best bet, I think it takes a little over a week for them to ship. If you needed it quick, you could order the Lunati set and have it arrive in 3 days or less.

^^True. Summit is basically waiting at your front door W/ your products after you hang up with them..lol Great place to do business with. If you are not in a hurry do the factory one. If you are in a need for it asap look into the other (which I have haven't heard much about)

I believe there are some minor modifications that will need to be done...I could be wrong IDK...As far as it being better, it's a matter of opinion. I personally wouldn't do one unless I had the motor out and was rebuilding it to something much bigger. For what you are doing the stock replacement will be more then sufficient

the LT4 Extreme Duty set is a much more substantial piece, I have pics of the stock LT1 and the LT4 ED side by side but it is on my other computer, there is really no comparison. As for installation, there is no modifications that need to be made but you do have to replace the water pump drive gear with the one that comes with the set, if you are leaving the intake on you need a special puller to pull it out of the block then press the new gear on the shaft, other than that it is a direct bolt on.

For the dollar and for his application it's really not worth it imo. How many of you guys have heard or seen a thread on here about a timing chain incident? I haven't seen one...well I take that back. I saw one on here a long time ago and it was on a guys LT4 chain that didn't work out so well.

the motor has been taken apart down to the block. everything else is off the motor.

Some have seemed to miss the fact that he said he has a 1994. In that case, he has a non-vented opti (I saw nothing about a vented conversion). So...he basically can use only a stock (or stock type) set that has the provision in the cam gear to turn his optispark. An LT4 ED will not work.
Elliot's94Z's list is correct for stock 94 components.
