Question Can You Really Have To Much Spark ?!?!?!?!

OK guys, if you have read my post in other threads you will have seen i have been having some issues with a miss or a slight stumble, well i had bought a MSD blaster coil and then bought a hypertech coil and still had the problem. Well last night i decided to put the AZ stock coil back on and no more problems. SO can you have to much spark? i thought more the merrier but i guess i was wrong. Has anyone else had this issue before or is it just me? Did i buy 2 bad coil's? Please tell me what you think guy's

I don't think it was an issue of too much spark. The factory coils work very well actually. There is no need to "upgrade" it. If you even want to consider those other coils upgrades.

Eh, I had just the opposite happen. My idle and whole rpm range was a bit rough then I put in an MSD blaster coil and it was real smooth.

Yes you can. It can create so much spark it jump out of the cables and archs. I bet you could see it arching of the coil in the dark.

X2^^^ it will show the weakness in the rest of your system, like you have bad wires etc... I've seen a new coil kill the short opti to coil wire in a few weeks on Patrol cars a bunch of times, we used to buy just 10pks of the short wires back in the day...

X3. That overly powerful spark will find the path of least resistance and maybe come out of the insulator of the plug wire.

i had the MSD Blaster Coil and there has been too many cases where the Coil Arc's off to other things it did with mine and i could see it arcing at night...i did my research and seen that a lot of LT1 owners had this same problem with aftermarket coils.

I went back to the stock coil and it was fine.

Stay with the stock coil!!!

if you're getting arcing from plug wires simply from upgrading your coil you need better wires.

cant have too much spark...your coils probably both arced from the housings...at night go outside in a dark area pop the hood and look for arcing...the coil is doing it...put the msd back on it and zip tie it away from any metal stuff...idle miss/stumble will go away...

I had a msd coil that cracked and arced off the holder and a Az coil replaced it fine.

As for your questions your plugs will only pull what is needed to jump the gap. We have ran test at school to prove this between a Stock Vs Msd coil and the firing lines were the same

I ran the 10.58 on stock ignition except for the Accel coil. The stock ignition is pretty good.

...or you need new wires. The coil is not to blame. I have been running an MSD Blaster coil and 6A for 10 years without a lick of trouble. AC-Delco wires, too. No direct replacement aftermarket coil is going to give you "too much" spark.

You can't really have "too much spark" per se, its really "not enough wire" .

Its not that you can have to much for the engine, but you can have to much for you ignition system to handle

lol That's a good way of putting it.

Capricemgr and a few others have stated that the aftermarket coils, specifically the MSD was being talked about, don't have a strong enough spark in the higher RPMs compared to stock.

I use a Mallory 685, MSD coil, and MSD opti on my car with no problems at all. I even use the Taylor OTVC wires and I know some people have had trouble with those. I have no arcing at night or anything.

This isn't really going to contribute to the thread. It's not arching, unless you're talking about McDonald's. In terms of electricty, the correct terminology is arcing. That's just a personal pet peeve of mine.

ZZZZZZBlah blah blah..... who cares this isnt grade school. Yes he could over power his current igintion system. So yes it is possible to have to much spark. Doest matter if its the coil or the wires or the engine. Fact is MSD coils can create so much spark it will arch to whatever to next metal surface is.
In the end the answer is yes.
