Hmm my car had 83k miles and they were clogged. . my point is there's no point in spending the money for new cats unless you have to pass emissions. Just take them out and forget about it. .

I agree completely. I don't have any cats on my stock y at the moment. I have a hooker 3" ory waiting to go on though.

How old are you thinking, and what metal are you referring to? I know they've been using platinum and palladium for some time (at least 1970). I'm sure there are newer types, but is that the type you're talking about? A lot of the reason for it not being easy to break out the honeycomb is due to the honeycomb structure itself, which is able to spread load across a large surface area even if you only can see a small portion of it. Yet what you said is still true, it's what they're made of that makes it a PITA

I have a 96 ws6 cut out cat , welded in straight pipe got 9 hp dynode right after work was done. We took the California air emissions box off plugged all holes this was our original goal/test on hp. it was 4. So then we decided to do cats and reran the dyno. Just my 5 cents worth but my advice take the cats off if you live in a state that don't check emissions , free hp. Im not sure on ls1 or the newer models mine is almost 20.

Mines a mostly stock LT-1 and I removed my cat as well...while I didn't get on a dyno, I did notice an increased throttle response, and a much better exhaust note....also removed about 20lbs between the cat itself and the accompanying brackets & bolts.

I had mine removed, they were reaching temperatures of about 700 degrees. It definitely made my 97 trans am run better but now I'm getting a service engine light with the code 0430 catalytic converter system. Dose not effect my performance any but I was wondering if there's a way to keep the light from coming on? Guessing it's just part of the pcm and I'll just have to live with it.

Ok I see a few different options, looks like I can go tunercat or hyper tech. Sorry it's my first time dealing with this.

I don't think a HyperTech can tune out any emission stuff. Software like TunerCat can if you know how to use it.

Any mail order tuner who does LT1 tuning can do it.

or just unplug the bulb....

Does anyone know if you can get away with having a single cat on a 96 Camaro. I know they come stock with 2 cats but was wondering if i could put one cat where the 2 separate pipes on a pacesetter y-pipe come together? Any thoughts or other ways i can still get away with having one cat?

Are you asking if it will pass emissions? In a lot of states an OBD2 car can pass with 1 fake cat, because they don't do a sniffer, just a visual inspection and look to see anything that looks like a cat. Then you can get it tuned out with a mail order tune. Don't ever buy a hypertech for anything, not even a bicycle.
