Default Stock Pistons & Rods

im pulling my block apart soon and want to know if i could reuse my connecting rods if there not damanged. im on a budget (as usual) and dont want to shell out extra cash that i dont need too. im not sure im going to be boring out the block. but if i bore it.030" over. which is a good piston to run ? im milling the heads .030 and running .026 gaskets

Stock rods will handle most any N/A 355 you want to run, as will the stock crank.

For the pistons will you be spraying it in the future? If so go forged, but if on a budget and staying N/A you should be fine with the Mahle replacement hypers in .030 over if you do bore it.

Stock rods and pistons can handle a good amount of power for a mild build. If you bore over, you can get some new 4.030" hypereutectic pistons, flat top w/ valve reliefs. Not sure of the brand to look for on a budget, something like Mahle speed pacs.

If it's made for a 5.7" rod, I don't see why not. I don't know what the sock cc of the valve reliefs are to compare. It would be something to keep in mind when you are try to compute your compression ratio.

The only thing if they are for standard sbc's they will be heavier than LT1 pistons, so that is another factor to take into account. For a budget hyper piston you really can't beat Mahle, they are even a great company to deal with.

Give me a second and I'll get you a link for LT1 Mahle pistons in whatever size you want.

thats what ive been trying to find out. im milling the heads and running thinner gaskets to bump my compression (on a stock short block) just over 11:1 i want my compression to be around there.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevy...Q5fAccessories

I know they are a little more than the speed pro's, but IMO they are worth it! I could sware they had a set with rings for under $200 (moly rings) I'll keep looking.

I would not trust a $11 piston. That's just me, if you plan to run boost on this engine you will want forged with out a doubt. If its pure N/A I would recommend mahle.

thanks alot man. i appreciate it. i have to see how i feel when the time comes when my engines apart at the shop to see if im going to bore it out or not. so 4.000 or 4.030 i might bore it out just to say i have a 355

its a pure street NA engine. im going to be running LE's 223/230 cam for now and see how i like it. and itll be real nice knowing my bottom end will support a much bigger grind in the future

Just make sure you replace the stock rod bolts with ARP, they are a source of rod bearing failure. If you ever want to go with a larger cam you will want to know the bottom end will support at least 6500 rpm with no problem.

Mahle made the stock LT1 pistons.

If you are going to buy pistons buy forged. You can also get some pretty good light weight forged rods for not much more than it will cost to fix the factory rods. That said, I have had some pretty good 7000+ rpm motors that had stock pistons and rods. I have also grenaded a couple!
