Default Oil Level Sensor

I have a '96 Z28 M6 (not sure if that matters) and around the oil level sensor or so i'm presuming, it leaks. I'm guessing that its just old and the seal is bad around the thing and was wondering where to get a new one. I checked Summit and Jegs but to no avail.

Also another problem. The car will climb to like 240 temp and then the fans kick in and cool it down to 210, the mechanic checked it out and said that it was normal but i'm not sure if thats correct or not. Was just wondering how I would go about trying to lower the temp at which it start to cool other than 240, maybe like 210?

The oil level sensor is a dealer-only part. GM part number 12603782.

Stock fans aren't intended to come on until 227 degrees. If you want them to come on sooner, you can get a mail-order tune or pick up a manual fan switch. Best used in conjunction with a 160-thermostat, but not necessary.

GM PART # 12603782 for the sensor (incl seal).

GM PART # 10151633 for the seal only.

An aftermarket fan switch or PCM reprogramming can change your fan ON temps. It is possible your gauge or sensors could be off a little, too.

Look here for info on the cooling system.

Talk to ion at madz28.com. He will set you up with an extra 13 or so more hp and turn on the fans lower for whatever thermostat you want to run. 150$ for the chip, its just a piggyback. You pcm has a prom chip now, the piggyback plugs into the comp and the prom plugs into the piggyback. It's easy, you just have to remove the comp(at the firewall on the pass side) and pop a cover off and install the chip and whatever thermostat you need and your set.

Could I possibly just keep the stock thermo? I just want the peace of mind that my car is not gonna get near the red in the temp gauge. This chip, what temp does it make the system cool at?

94+ models do not have a chip - only 93s. He has a reflashable PCM.

Like I said, your 96 does not have a chip. You send Ion your PCM and he will program it for you with whatever you want. If you wanted to reuse your stock 180 thermostat, that would be fine too.

With a 160 thermostat and reprogrammed fans, your car will get lucky to see 200 degrees. You might want to flush your cooling system as well, if it hasn't been done in awhile.

Fixed. I said 94+ models don't have a chip. That includes your 96. Which I accidentally typed as a 93. My bad.

So he IS human! :O

Was in the process of looking it up on Napa ProLink when I rad what DG said. Found it there so I decided a part number would help us all out. Sorry, I don't have a price since ProLink is for accounts and it gives a different price than retail :\ List was $39 (which has usually never been retail price, generally higher).

(No, I'm not nitpicking, or correcting because it's you, just adding)
For at least 93s, it's 226F for Fan 1 and 235.5F for Fan 2. That's directly from the stock BIN dump, 107.75C and 113C (either TunerPro or ECM cars are programed in Celsius, my 91 was the same).

I know its from the factory so nothing is wrong with those temps, but isn't that rather high? My '00 V6 when I had it would always be at a constant like 180 and would never go higher. Wouldn't it ruin something being that high in stop and go traffic or whatever just chillin' at the temperature?

That is what they were designed to run at. They use a high pressure (18 psi) system that prevents boiling at those temps. Emissions are always a factor in the engine running temp. They have to meet the regulations.
All this does not mean you can't make it run a little cooler.

Usually, anyone that is familiar with older SBCs think the temp is high.
