Default Needing advice on replacing timing gear and chain

What parts(part #'s if you know them) will i need to change out my timing gears, chain, gaskets, ect. The oil is already drained i have never messed with this part of the engine before though. What tools will i need also. Any advice and/or pictures will help me out a lot.

Thanks
Mike

You will need to remove the entire front assembly of the engine, including water pump, cooling fans, optispark, crank hub and pulley (requires a puller), and timing cover (requires lowering of the oil pan). Removing the crank gear requires a gear puller (3-toe). Someone else will chime in on the part numbers needed I'm sure.

thank you. I guess i did need to mention that the front assembly is already removed. The seal where the opti shaft goes in went out and allowed oil into my opti causeing my msd cap and rotor to arch on to the shutter wheel causing it to fail. So this is why i am replacing the gears and chain since i already have to remove the timing cover to replace that seal. The engine has 178xxx on it so i figured it was time to replace the chain and gears out.

Not a bad thing to change it but at the same time not atall necessary. This isn't some little 4 banger with a timing belt thaty needs preventative replacement.

Stock parts are fine so just get stock replacement.

that is all i planned on replacing it with. I have had a small miss that i cant get rid of and everything else has been replaced... so this i felt like might be it and since it was already torn down i was going to do it while it is up on stands. I knew someone had posted a few months ago about the part #'s on gmpartsdirect.com but i cant find the thread so i figured i would ask to see if someone remembered those part numbers. My car is a 93 T/A as stated in the signiture since i know mine is different being it came factory non-vented opti

If any of the timing cover seals leak...you don't need to pull the TC cover to replace.

thank you for the part #'s Elliot's94z. Does the seal for where the distributor shaft inserts the timing cover come with the crankshaft front oil seal? and also like i said i have a 178xxx miles on the car with a slight miss and this is the only part that i have not changed on the car so im down to thinking that this must be the problem. And while the car is still up off the ground and disassymbles i figure why not change it now.

That is why i am changing it. The seal going out just made my msd cap and rotor to fail.

You can go to an auto parts store and buy a timing cover gasket set. It's cheaper than buying all the seals separately. It has all the cover seals.

If you replace the water pump seal, you mighit want to look at this: http://www.impalasuperstore.com/nais...TOPIC_ID=30984
