Guys with LS1 air lid conversions
For you guys with LS1 air lid conversions, has anyone tried to rig up an FTRA(Fast Toys Ram Air) or SSRA(Super Sucker Ram Air) from the LS1's? From what I've seen, guys have reported some solid gains from them. So, I was thinking about maybe picking up an SSRA to test it out, to see if I could get it to work. And I was just wanting to know if anyone had tried it already with any luck. I'm thinking about ordering it tomorrow, because I want to try and get it done before the track opens on the 18th. I'm just not sure of how well it'd work, or if I could get it to work with the lid setup on an LT1.

You cannot do a full LS1 lid and lower airbox without an aftermarket cowl/ram air hood on a Camaro, you also have to shave the lower piece to fit the rad support as they are different. I'd assume the FTRA or other pieces which fit into the lower airbox on a LS1 are going to work if you are able to use the lower piece, if you were trying to use a LS1 lid only I'm not sure there would be a place for it to attach onto.

Alright. I just went to the local farm supply store, and picked up a big piece of thin sheet metal (24"x36"). I'm going to use it to make a filter tray, and maybe use the rest to make a radiator cover, since I haven't done that yet, if I have enough left. Then, I'm going to order the SSRA kit tonight. I'll make the tray, and make sure everything seals up, then I'll cut a slit in the bottom of it, for the SSRA to force feed into, and it should work. I'm going to try and start on the tray tonight, so I can have everything ready for the track on the 18th. I'll post up some pics of the progress once I start.

Ok. Friday night will be when I start on this. I got the SSRA ordered now, and it should be here Friday. So, as soon as I get off work, progress will be under way. Hopefully it'll all go together pretty easily and quickly, unlike most things I end up doing on my car. lol.

well i started to do this but then it would take away all the sapport of the lower box also decreasing the surface area that the filter was exposed to air. The filter would have been butted up against the core sapport. the LS1 core sapports come flat anyways and it is only flat where the lower box goes so it is not visible anyways

lol. Nope, ran into a little trouble. The AC condensor is keeping me from being able to slide the top part of the SSRA in. But, that's alright, because the A/C is getting ripped out of the car on Monday. I do about have my air box done though. I'm getting ready to head back over and work on it a little more right now. Hopefully the airbox will just be temporary though. I'm not perfectly happy with how it's turning out. But, it should get the job done until I can find something better to use.

Well, I made a little more progress today. A buddy and I got all the A/C crap ripped out, and put the delete pulley on. Tomorrow my makeshift airbox should be all done, and I'm going to try putting the SSRA on after work. I've decided that my airbox I'm making is just going to be temporary, and I'm going to pick up an LS1 lower airbox, and modify the crap out of it, to get it to work, just so I can make sure I get a good seal on the lid and airbox. Here's a quick pic once the condesor was removed. I'll have some more pics up tomorrow night after I've got the airbox and SSRA in, hopefully.

Well, my airbox idea went to crap and wasn't going to work. So, that wasnt finished. The SSRA is on my car though. Don't know how much of a benefit I'm getting without it sealed to an airbox. But, that's alright, because I've got a stock LS1 lower airbox coming. Actually, I wound up winning one on eBay too. So, I've got two coming. But, I'm going to do a hell of a lot of modding to them, to see if I can get them to work, and hopefully have a fully finished product, by the middle of next week.

when I had a lower box I managed to cut alot of it down by using a regular metal grinding wheel on the plastic and just going slow as it obviously melts away, you can take your time and get it to sit flush with the LT1 rad support and that should get it about 1" lower without cutting up the sides etc.. If you have stock hood I don't think this will get you there but if you have 2 coming i say chop it up
