How much is involved other then the engine/tranny, just wondering because i can pick up a really nice 96 Camaro for cheap, its a T-Top auto with chrome LS1 wheels, has an engine noise, they think its a rod, haven't checked it in person yet, but looked at some pix of the car, it is purdy, its that forest green.

You're already on the right track. Having a donor car is the most ideal scenario. Start swapping everything over.

I guess i could, but if theres going to be alot involved, i'll just replace the 6 & have a nice driver for less then 2K.

Are you wanting to put ur 97 lt1 into the 96 3.8 car? if so, the body harness will have to be switched out because the 97 speedo wont work with a 96 body harness. The dash's are different. Lemme know though, u have everything to do it, if you have a donor car. And its not that bad. Mine was bad cuz i didnt have a donor car. So I had to hunt for every tiny piece.
