Default Who has the fastest car with a gm lt4 hotcam?

Just wondering? I know people will say its a weak cam and all, but I already have it and was wondering if a set of ai heads would give me 400rwhp?

No. But if you get the heads, it will sure wake up the car. Throw in some 3.73 gears, larger stall, suspension mods, tires, and some weight reduction and I'm sure you could put down some impressive times.

hmmm maybe AI's 200 cc heads. the cam isnt that weak. but i do feel there are better cams out there to make alot of people happy. for me it was LE's 223/230 @112. it just seemed perfect for me and how i drive the car. not to mention i gasket matched my heads and intake so it should wake it up just alittle bit more

So How many horsepower would I be leaving on the table if I were to keep the hotcam instead of a custom grind?

If your gonna do heads, ditch the hot cam! Its a decent all around cam but its not gonna make 400rwhp or set any records.

I've never ran across a hot-cam'd car making 400rwhp. Most 847 cars don't see a whole lot pass that. I doubt a hot-cam'd car could do it.

It all depends on what else the car has and how well it's setup. I've heard of guys running more than 380 rwhp plus a smaller cam like that won't wear the valvetrain as much. Driveability will be better than with a bigger cam that's for sure. But if you setup the car properly and have the supporting mods you can still lay down some good numbers, even with a hotcam. However if all around power is what you're looking for then a midsized custom cam wouldn't be a bad route. The AI 226/234 is a good one and so is the 230/236 that Lloyd does.

If your gonna spend the loot on a set of AI heads, spend the extra cash and get the cam desined by the pros to match em'.

If the hotcam can get me 400rwhp Ill be happy. I dont want to rev my car to 6800rpm to make power and there will be plenty of low end torque as well as mid rand and upper rpm hp. And the valve springs will last forever.

That's me actually. But I don't expect anyone here will believe it. No one did years ago when I acheived it. But I wasn't the only one. A few others got 400RWhp on the HOT cam also, like Brent Franker.

Pyro, yes some AI heads will help immensely. When I installed the ported heads I gained 40 rwhp, but that was with milling them .035 and using the LT-1 Impala gasket for another point compression increase. Btw, they are from Gallant Technical Performance(GTP). All us oldheads bought them back in the 90's because they were the hottest thing out there. But that only got me to 365 RWhp. After that I continued tweaking parts(like 58mm TB, EWP, ported intake, etc.) and tuning until I got the 400.

With patience, it is doable. Cripes, I put in the HOT cam in 1998 and the heads on in 1999 and the engine hasn't been apart since then.

It is definitely possible with the AI, they are very strong performers.

I don't know of anyone that made that much with a HOT cam and heads. I was running stock heads and went 12.4 back in '99. My parent's have the HOT cam with LT4 intake and heads in both Comp TA's. He did 375rwhp, also in '99. His car ran 12.2 back then and Mom's ran 12.5, M6 and A4 respectively.

I might throw mine on a dyno one of these days to see what its at now. But I know mine won't throw down some crazy numbers. Probably around 330-340rwhp.

Yup Thats You! lol Congrats on the 11.6! That would be close to to a 10.6 at sea level! Just imagine what the hotcam would do with ai heads! What was your MPH on that run? Gregbob We can compare combo's All my parts are in my sig. I think with some Ai heads and an electric water pump and 52mm throttle body I can gain 80rwhp?

Unfortunately you won't meet your goal of 400rwhp. Start planning for a better cam.
