4 bolts down the center...pop it off. May have to move wiring around a bit depending on the side...but overall not too big of a deal.

If the oil has been changed pretty regularly and maintenance has been done in regular intervals, the sludge probably won't be a big problem if there is any at all. I had to pull a valve cover off my '93 with 115K miles and it looked like a new head under the cover...was in very good shape sludge wise. The valve springs are probably weak and things could probably use a freshening up, which I will do when I do the cam swap and head work, but overall I was surprised at how clean it looked under there.

The alternator needs to come off for the passenger side valve cover.

If he just wants to see if there is sludge or look at the condition of the heads by eye, just pulling the driver's one should be ok...unless he's checking for broken valve springs, rockers, etc. But yes, if pulling both, alt. on pass. side needs to come off.

just remove the oil fill cap and look/feel inside for sludge...if that is the purpose of pulling the VC.

replace VC gaskets with fel pro rubber ones if pulling VC's

I think the AIR tubes need to be moved also. I had to remove mine on the drivers side to get the cover off.
