Default Just a quick fast quesion for you guys

ok as some of you may know i pulled out the t-56 out of my brothers car. I am in the process of doing the rear main seal and I got 5 bolts out of the flywheel and figures the last one rounded the head. Someone torqued these WAY down past specs. But I have tried almost everything. Now my question to you guys is this: Can I take a grinder and grind down the bolt pretty close to flush and try to pry off the flywheel and then hope theres enough threads left to get a pair of vise grips on and back the rest of the threads out? I am not a good welder at all so welding a nut on is out of the question lol

Take the grinder and slice off some of the rounded part so that you can get a wrench on it, like a 1/2 inch wrench or something. Just make 2 cuts on either side. Basically you are going to take a "round" looking bolt head and make it into a rectangular bolt head.

Run to your auto store and buy an extractor set. My set at work has saved me thousands of headaches.

If you have a welder, you dont need a perfect weld to get the nut on there decent. Just set the heat and speed to the middle, wack it in a circular motion until the hole of the nut is filled. It should hold for this purpose.

Ahh sorry forgot to add I did buy a bolt extractor set "Irwin" cost $98.00 and all they will do is round off also I even pounded a smaller one on.. I will try to grind down 2 sides so I can get a wrench on there. Someone torqued these down past 85 ft lbs

Bummer. Be careful cutting, and good luck. Use some rust penetrate on it, you may even try applying some heat to it.

If you grind it down, thatll just the flywheel off, not the bolt out. At that point you could try vice grips but by the sounds of it, that wouldnt help much. Itll give you more room to weld a nut onto it though as I doubt there will be enough to double nut it

I worked in a machine shop, with some millwrights, if you round the head off and the vise grips don't work, weld a nut on it and then heat it and wrench it off and pray.
