Default Problems with wiring a Meziere waterpump w/ Painless harness

A friend and I are trying to get a Meziere electric waterpump wired up and working in a 95 Z28 with the Painless wiring kit. Both of us are definitely novices with electrical/wiring so we are looking for some info as to what we did wrong here. I'll try to show everything we did with pics as clear as possible (it's pretty straight forward):

Here we have the two wires, black and blue, that come straight out of the WP and go to the connector...

..from the connector we have a black ground which you can see we hooked up to the top of the radiator support, and the blue wire which goes into the Painless relay, next to the red wire in the bottom of the pic (there's an inline fuse -not pictured- in this blue wire). The ground from the relay is hooked up to the screw that is holding the relay itself to the rad support. Then there is the blue wire coming from the relay on the right of the pic and the red wire...

...we ran the blue wire from the relay to this wire to the fusebox, the ignition fuse, the thinking being that it should give 12 volts to the waterpump whenever the key is turned on.

The red wire runs from the relay, along the rad support...

...past the battery to this little circuit breaker from the Painless kit, then to the terminal box.

Right now when you turn the key you can hear a few clicks (from the fusebox?), waterpump doesn't run, and it blows the inline fuse in the blue waterpump to relay wire.

We did briefly have the pump running after turning the key, but the next time we tried it, it ran for a few seconds then stopped - figured it was the quick splice we used to splice into the ignition wire because it didn't seem like a solid connection there (had to fiddle with it before the pump turned on at all) but then we replaced it with the heatshrink/solder splice you see in the pic.

So what did we screw up in wiring this? Thanks in advance...

Default

start eliminating all the variables is the easiest way to start.

1) unplug the harness, confirm that the pump will spin with the black grounded and blue straight to the battery. If ok, your waterpump is fine
2) check the grounds and confirm you have good grounds and everything is tight. if successful there, then check the relay and wiring to the relay, make sure nothing is loose.
3) find another source for your switched power besides the ignition fuse, i think the a/c is relay is another option.
