Default Clutch install disaster!

So I have a 97 30th Anv SS with a T56. My clutch was on its way out so I ordered a new one on ebay. So we got it, removed everything we had to, pulled the tranny, and installed the new clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing and new pilot bushing. We torqued everything to spec and in a star pattern in three torque increments and did everything that we were supposed to. When we put everything back together and started it up, when you push in the clutch you get this mad crazy rotational griding/screaching sound, as soon as you let off the clutch the sound goes away. I have been talking with some guys here in Jacksonville, and they seem to think that grinding the fork down will help. I don't know how to do this and it seems kinda shady. If you have any insight at all that would be great. I am clueless, although I know I will have to take everything back apart.

Here is the link to what I bought-------> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/F1-ST...Q5fAccessories

Does it sound anything like this? In my case even though I had installed a new pilot bushing it was spinning.

hmmm, you seem to have bought a pretty stout clutch over your stocker and because the noise occurs only when the clutch is pressed then depressed i would maybe look into your hydraulics. maybe it too needs to be upgraded or perhaps its having issues holding the pressue needed to engage that clutch. just a thought.

on all new flywheels and pressure plates there marked for balance. Usually on the flywheel theres a white "X" and on the pressure plate theres either a yellow dot or some sort of marking you gotta line up. But that would be for vibration not chattering/grinding. What did you torque the pressure plate down to?

Well I used 400 grit sandpaper on the tip of the input shaft as it was kinda galled up, and then put in another new pilot bushing and also replaced my throwout bearing while I was in there. Not sure why the first new pilot bushing started to spin, maybe the input shaft needed cleaning up originally and I didn't notice.

More than likely it is your fork rubbing against the PP. I had the same thing happen w/ the exact symptoms as what you describe when I encountered it. I made a post about it on cz28.com, but no one cared.

Default Clutch install!

I have had something like that happen to me. I got the spec 3+ and put it in my 97. When the clutch was released the noise went away. The problem that I found was that the c clip that holds the throwout bearing to the pressure plate had broken into. This aloud the shift fork to rub the back side of the pressure plate and ground off some of the metal around the outer edge of the pressure plate. Before you pull the transmission out take the dust shield off and run your finger across the bottom of the bellhousing that is how I found out my problem. Are you in Jacksonville N.C.?

it was the fork grinding on the pressure plate, apparently the aftermarket is slightly thicker I also have a nice shinny ring. SS
RRR did you just use a dremmel tool to grind it down? I think that is what I am gonna do vs. pulling the whole tranny again. Oh and I am in jacksonville, FL not NC Thanks for all the help guys.
