Default timing chain problem

How do I remove the water pump drive gear assembly from the block? I want to replace the gear, but cant get the gear and shaft out of the block.

There is a special puller for it, I am sure someone will pipe up, when I did it I had my intake off so I beat mine out from the back with a brass rod.

A friend of mine made a puller for the wp drive, he took a piece of pipe welded a plate on one end and then cut into the plate enough so that the inner diameter of the wp drive would slide into it and not the outer diameter. Then we just took a hammer to the back side and it came out eventually.

Sorry, if you saw it, but disregard my first response, I mis-read your question. I thought you were referring to the crank gear.

I can check later today to be sure, but from memory when I removed mine, it was bolted to the block with the bolts accessed with the intake off. Mine's a 96 LT1.

With the intake manifold off removal is very easy. Just unbolt it and pound out the bearing from the backside. You can leave the new hole in the block open.
