Default rear reccomendations

im building a 94 formula A4 when i get back mainly a bolt on project have CAI, pacesetter LTs Dual exhaust. Throttle body airfoil. getting a tune and a 3400 stall converter when i get back along with switching to 3.73 i was mainly wondering at what point do i really need to start thinking about swapping a rear to something stronger.

On the drive home after you've bought the car. They really are THAT weak.

I have a 97 formula A4, 120k miles. only have a CAI. I hear all this talk about the 10 bolts being so weak, but i have not had any problems. I would suggest getting a 12 bolt just for the simple fact your rear end is 15 years old. Bolt ons plus stall on that 15 year old rear end cant be good weak or strong.

Autos are a lot more gentle then M6s on the rearend. Just make sure you have the proper suspension mods to prevent wheelhop like LCAs, relos, and a tq arm.

If you are not cammed or spraying I would just run with the 10 bolt unless you will be running slicks and a lot of gear. **edit** or a transbrake

I agree Puck..My car sees the strip every other weekend, 64 passes so far this year & the 10 bolt is holding up at my power level.

Well I just brought 94Z m6 and have a fully forged built 383 going together so I'm selling my 10 bolt and going to an S60 Dana 60 rear because as already stated A4's are much easier on the rear than M6's unless your A4 has a transbrake.

Good point - a tranny brake is even more vicious then dumping the clutch with an M6. You can't lift your foot off of the clutch faster then a solenoid can engage . I edited my last point to add that, thanks .

If you have to have an aftermarket rear, I would suggest perhaps the Dana 60. Just because then you could reuse your rear sway bar mounts. I have a Moser 9" and because they use 3" axle housings, I had to get a set of sway bar mounts from Spohn. Not an outlandish proposition...I think they were like $75. All that being said, not a regret but it would save you a few bones. I will say this, I do love the Moser!

The S60 uses 3.125" axle tubes but comes with the swaybar mounts needed, I had another 97 SS m6 which I spent a lot of money beefing up the 10 bolt (Moser 28 spline forged axles, Detroit Locker, T/A girdle) and I still blew 2 sets of Richmond 4.10s before finally installing a set of Motive 4.10's which lasted longer but I stopped drag racing after installing the Motive's. So from that expirence I'm not wasting any time or money on the 10 bolt with an M6.
