LT1 convert to a carb and 84 gutluss
I'm sure this has been on here before but, What do you need to do to convert the LT1 over to a carb motor? Has anybody put one in a mid 80's G-body? If so what problems have you ran into and will regular LT1 headers fit? Any help would be much appreciated.

I already have a long block LT1 with 63,000. If I got the carbed intake I would just use a HEI? or DUI? distributor in the normal GEN 1 spot? Can I use some sort of harness to still use the opti or just leave the opti dead and go the other route? I also thought the exhaust ports where different on the LT1s. They are more of D shape?

1. get a carbed intake and or single plane mod!
2. get rid of optispark, and get an optispark block off plate with a timing pointer and get an LT1 balancer with timing marks so you can tiime the engine just like a conventional SBC
3. get a distributor, HEI or any other type for a small block chevy.
4. preferably get an electric water pump, not neccessary but an option.
5. any type of SBC headers will work as long as the primary tubes are atleast 1 3/4 in diameter so they can cover the d-ports.
it will look something like my engine in the attachement picture...
i think that about covers it... if i think of anything else ill post it, anyone feel free to chime in!

i'm using a powerfire distributor...makes adjusting timing easier (its just a **** that you turn)
definetely ditch the optispark. i didn't get the cover/block off plate, just blocked/rtv's off the hole...
i used a universal timing reference pointer...and timing tape.
i'm also using a custom wiring harness...12 circuit race harness basically...no frills. it makes life easier. i have the ignition and starter on a toggle/push button.
pm me if you have any questions...it should be firing up real soon ;-)
oh and if you are using an electric fuel pump (high-flow...) you need a bypass style regulator (mallory 4309 i think is what i'm using) which will keep the pressure between 3 and 12 psi...
you will need to make a throttle bracket/custom throttle cable (both of which can be bought pretty cheap) to work with the carb.
good luck

yea man, a timing pointer built in is great when oyu have a balancer with timing marks on it, you cant put timing tape on an LT1 balancer because the balancer is the pulley and theres no room left for any tape. and hegs has these awesone throttle cable brakets with built in return springs, it bolts to our carb, plain and simple, and they have them to fit a lokar throttle cable, they are pretty much universal, you cut to fit the length, youll have to have one!

Well I have a similar setup I'm removing from my 83 Malibu wagon (G-body) and I used the Street & Performance LT1 accessory bracket setup which places the alt on the passenger side head and the a/c compressor on the drivers side head and has the idlers for a serpentine belt.
I'm selling it all by the way let me know if you're interested aero.coupe@hotmail.com I'm in MD.
I have a new ported LT1 carb intake $250 + shipping obo
New Accell HEI distributor $150 + shipping obo
1 5/8" blackjack G-body headers $125 + shipping
New BG 750 dp carb $425 + shipping
New BG 850 vac carb $410 + shipping
Street & performance accessory brackets $650 + shipping obo

I did this with ease
HI I bought a 2300 mile 96lt1 from a junkie for $160.00 complete motor. I converted it to a carb to avoid computer issues. it was simple. i put the biggest cam ported the heads to lt4. used a standard hei distributor. stock water pump. regular 84 camaro long tube headers. full roller conversion. 650 holley doublepump. sooo many people told me to avoid this conversion. i didn't listen. my car ran 12.48 the first time ever at the track. stock tires and a .8 reaction time. spun first and second bad. i know its not the fasted car in the world but it gets my gfs panties wet. im sure with a little tunning and slicks and race gas =11s. i put 1500.00 into the motor and it pumps out im sure 400-450hp and revs to 7gs easily. if you need ne info i would love to help. let me know. drop me an email and i'll call you.

Steam pipes
What did you guys do with two steam pipes coming from the back of the heads? Did you plugged them? Did you leave them?
If you left them open, where are you connecting them to? Since you are not running the same throttle body.
Please help. I want to run a carb LT1 also.
