You don't "need" a tune if you add a 160 thermostat...however if you dont get a tune, when you idle for a bit...such as if your waiting in the staging area at the track...your temp will still rise to 210 until the fans kick on.

The tune lowers the temp at which your fans come on. I have a 160 and I had my fans adjusted so that they turn on low at 180 and high at 190.

This does require a tuner to dig into your computer, so while your at it I would get a few other things done as well!

It's not absolutely necessary to get a tune when switching to the lower temp tstat but to gain the benefits of it you need to have the fans reprogrammed to come on at a early temp!

Like others have said, it's not mandatory to tune for a 160. Alot of People refer to any changes in the pcm as "tuning". When really all thats being changed is the fan temp on/off settings. When you install the 160, the thermostat is going to open up at 160 degrees obviously. But the fans still won't come on till 210-215 and won't go off till 195-200( as per factory settings roughly*). So cruisin down the highway your **** will run nice and cool. But when your sitting at a light or in heavy stop and go traffic, it will run up at the factory 200-210 temps. There is No airflowing to cool it down.

reduced emissions, if memory serves me correct the factory designed the motor to run hot to reduce emissions. In turn it really messed with the drive ability of the car, hence why we all lower our fan kick on temps and lower our thermostats...
