Look for the RPO sticker it is either in the glove box or on the drivers door.

GU2=2.73
GU5=3.23

wait... so the 97 TA A4 came with 3.23 but 97 Z28 A4 only has 2.73? 3.23's would be so sweet in my 97 Z28... 2.73's suck

An auto can come with either gear. It depends on the RPO code when ordered.

Here is the quickest way to determine by the look of your shifter pattern....

1 2 D (D) N R P = 3.23
2 D (D) N R P = 2.73

Now thats assuming either the rear hasnt been replaced or the shifter plate.

so all 2.73 cars had the first gear lockout? i know about this and have even modded a few of them(its just a piece of plastic keeping the shifter from goin in first gear) but never knew it was all 2.73 cars that did it. good to know

do a search. There was just a thread on this within the past week. ss.slp.ls1 just listed out all the possibilities for 96's and 97s in detail.
