Coolant leak out of Tstat housing.
I threw in my 160* thermostat today, unplugged the coolant line running to the housing, took off the top and removed the thermostat that was sitting in the base with all the coolant.
Popped in the new one, slapped some silicon around the edges of the gasket and bolted it back in, connected the line and took it out for a drive.
Runs much cooler now, but theres a pretty good coolant leak, looks like its coming out of the front of the ***** shaped housing, but not the coolant line.
Did I miss something, or should I just take it all off and make sure its got enough silicon and its tight on there?

last time i swaped an aftermarket thrmostat i had a hard time seating the thrmostat rubber seal into where it should sit in the WP until i lubricated it with a lot of pressing around the edges...just make sure its proprly seated

The only gasket that should be on the thermostat housing is the o-ring on the thermostat, itself. Sticking another gasket an using silicone on there may actually cause it to leak. The pump and water neck are precision machined to fit together.

same here,, never used any kind of sealant or gasket there. no leaking so far...imo, as long as the t-stat o-ring seal is in good condition and the bolts are properly torqued, u shouldnt have leaking issues

LOL at autozone, i ordered a hypertech 160 (a new one cause i lost my old one) and he said the gasket and everything is inside. I just looked at him and said it doesn't use a gasket. Like shbox says, just put the t stat in and put the to bolts back in. I change mine out during the winter and ive never had a leak. as long as the O-ring in in tack its all good
