What gauge wire for wiring harness

The wire gauge will depend on the current draw of a particular circuit. There is not a one size fits all solution.

With lots of practice, you can tell by sight. Until then, use your wire stripper. If it strips the wire w/o removing any strands, you have it correct. Most in my car are 16 gauge b/c they don't carry a lot of current. But there are also 14 gauge and a few 12 gauge.

I was under the impression that the engine harness was composed of the same gauge wire?
I'll have to look at the wires a little more thoroughly, I didn't realize they may be different.
