They don't have a transmission, they use direct drive. The cars actually "change gears" by the expansion of the tires throughout the run. The clutch they use is a multi-stage one that they engage via hand control, similar to an aircraft throttle. The cylinder sleeves are done after each pass, nitromethane isn't too kind on the cylinder walls, I'm not sure how often they change blocks though.

Bill Miller has a dyno to measure 8,000hp engines.

Not including the aftermarket versions, Chrysler produced both the D5 and D6 heads with dual spark plugs per cylinder.

I wish there was some kind of ride along program to experience what it's like to drive a Top Fuel dragster or Funny Car. I read somewhere that the 8G's TF pulls in the quarter is equal to a space shuttle launch.

Damn that is intense when you hear it explained that way. Overcoming a 200 mph handicap in 1320 ft like its nothing.

To correct my previous post, I just read an article in the Sept 2010 issue of Car Craft that covered just this topic:

They use an electronic timer for the clutch.

They pull more than 5G's where a shuttle pulls 3G's.

The TQ curve would be interesting to see but impossible to measure on any current dyno. The highest engine dyno I know of is in Jim Oddy's shop in Elma, NY and it is rated to 3000 hp. He maxes it out with his ADRL Pro Extreme screw blown hemi. Its used more for testing fuel curves and alcohol roots blown motors.
yep a full tilt screw blower like for jason scruggs or the shiek is making around 3800hp and the top none screw runs around 3200k..screw blowers are banned from t/f,t/a,an both f/c classes not to mention nhra also banned the screw blower from being ran 1/4 in pro-mods,,scotty canon jr had or has the screw blower record with a 5.7x an was done 2yrs ago at shake down at e town.

Nhra doesnt allow alot of the newer tech to be used,Them cars could go alot faster if so..

the clutch is ran by timers but its all done with pneumatics, when you see them lift the fuel car bodys after the burn outs and there working right behind the fuel cells they are messing with the pneumatics that control everything.

but you are right they pull more g's then the space shuttle..heres a crazy fact when the chutes are pulled they pull the most g's then and its enough to where it can detach your retina's..if you look there is a slight delay on the second chute so both dont open at the sametime..pretty crazy stuff.

Anyone know what are the only fuel Cars ever band from competition?
