Default Fuel economy

I'm getting 21-22 MPG average with my '93 A4 3.23. I have been using the car to commute 140 miles round trip daily for 2 months now. Until I get a place closer to my new job, I am stuck with this commute and using the LT1 for it (my other vehicle is a '97 K3500 with a 454 and 4.10 gears, 9 MPG highway).

What are you guys getting for highway fuel economy? Anyone find good ways to improve f-body fuel economy aside from taking it easy on the gas pedal or changing engines or gear ratios?

I would buy a beater 4- banger for that trip. 22mpg is pretty good.

Is that straight highway mpg's or a mix?

I get 19-20mpg highway if I baby my car with 3.73's and ~400rwhp. Around town or with a mix of town/highway that is a whole nother story because the 4000 stall pretty much murders it.

A tune may help you out a little but nothing real significant. Weight reduction would help out a little as well.

I've been getting about 24-25 on the highway 95 m6 bird, and once that was with my t-tops off doing about 80mph.

That's part of the joys of an automatic. I get ~25 mpg cruising at 80-90 in my h/c car on the highway. Around town is a different story though.

Anywhere from 15-30 mpg the 30 mpg was on a cross country trip though.

I also did once "hypermile" the car, rural/suburban driving and got 26 mpg. That was definitely repeatable because I did the same trips with my lt1 caprice (automatic/heavier) and got 23 mpg.

I've been getting around 18mpg with an A4 and 3000 stall; driving somewhat aggressive between 60 and 80.

Before i put on DR's i was getting 26mpg
You'll improve fuel economy by driving slow (speeds below 55mph).
Clean air filter, fuel filter, and injector cleaning might help some too. I got the best mpg by running tires at 32psi

I would rotate the tires, change air/fuel filter, new plugs, and do a good once over on everthing that could effect MPG's. Could the brakes be sticking? Do you have a PCM tune?

I think you can improve it some (24mpg) but it will never be like a 4cyl civic/accord tho. My accord (4cyl) gets 36mpg doing 70mph.

95 A4, LT1, 2200ish stall, and 3.23s, and I get about what you are looking for 20-23mpg. I drive mine 120 miles daily, though I don't get stuck in much stop and go traffic. If I could keep my foot out of it on the back roads, I'd probably get closer to 25.

I was getting 20 bone stock with 2.73's. With 4.10's I was getting 15 or less.
Once I finish my rebuild with a 4000 stall and bigger cam I'll be lucky if I get 10.

55mph is not ideal fuel economy for a car with overdrive (or better 2 overdrives), a lot of power, and aerodynamic.

I got 30 mpg averaging over 70.

Yeah thats true, I was mainly thinking of where the rpm is at.
For the M6 car's 55mph would be too slow, since you dont want it to lug.
For the A4's i think the 55-65mph would be better.

With my M6 rear gears (3.42's) i was getting 1,700rpm@70mph in 6th gear.

97% of my drive is highway and I have been setting cruise control at 65 (the speed limit) I have found anything much below 60 in overdrive lugs the engine, especially on hills. Maintenance is up to date (plugs, wires, fuel + air filters, new opti, new coil, tires at 35 psi).

I am about due for new front brakes (pads and rotors are worn out). Would a low drag "race" brake setup like the Strange setup provide a significant improvement and still be streetable?

I am also considering a new set of rims. Anything to look for besides lightest weight for the best fuel economy?

I used to get 26-28 on the highway with my stock motor. Or around 350+ a tank. I think the worst I ever had in the city was 120 miles to a tank.
My old 388ci only got around 250 highway and 140 city.
My new 396ci I don't even know.

What is the average cost of a 6 speed swap with used parts aside from clutch and flywheel?

1200 easy. How cheaply you can get the trans, pigtails, and pedals is going to be the main hurdle. Then whatever clutch you want to get. The center console is also hard to find on the cheap in good condition.
