abs inop!
ok so i have always had an abs inop light on, i assume that my abs is just fucked up, and the mechanic i took it to doesnt know wtf to do. anyway, he said that the brakes would still function normally.
but the car will barely stop when i am backing up and push the brakes, and they wont lock up at all, they wont even get close forwards or backwards.
the pedal has to go nearly to the floor no matter how fast i am going.
my e-brake has to constantly be pulled up, it wont hold pressure unless i am pulling it ( if i pulled it slowly nothing would happen)
and above all, this is a 94 z28, it should have better stopping power than my v6 did right?
idk what to do, any suggestions?

what has been done?? are the brake pads ok are rotors within spec?? it doesnt make sense that you have to push so hard on the pedal to stop.. also your e-brake is always pulled? even when driving? or to help you stop? does your pedal fade to the floor??

we need to know exactly what is happening now.. it sounds like you have had the car for a while now and the abs light has been on since day one?? correct?? so if your brakes worked before then they still should.. when did you have a mechanic look at it?? for the light or for your brakes not working?

they never worked properly and im finally getting to them, my brakes feel like they are too soft, sort of like a large truck's would feel, and the e-brake only grabs if im putting pressure on it, so while im pulling it up, it grabs, but if i leave leave it up, it doesnt, im starting to think i just need to replace the calipers.

If the ABS system has air in it you have to bleed the system with a Tech II tool from what I've read. Dealer should be able to do it.
I've had my ABS INOP light on for like 5 years, brakes work fine but the ABS dosent, so it dosent bother me.

well i mean, the guy that looked at them said that lt1 brakes were just shitty, but they cant be THAT shitty, i mean something is definitely going on with the rear brakes at least

so what it sounds like to me is what LT1 said its probably the master cylinder if you can get into the car and with the car off push on the brake pedal and the pedal starts to slowly go to the floor you most likely have a master cylinder that is bypassing this is of course if you have look at all your other braking components and ruled them out such as brake lines and calipers are not leaking. as for the e-brake mine does the same thing they arnt strong enough to prevent your mighty v-8 from going where it wants to.. sometimes i forget its on when im backing up

but what if its just softish, but still still comes back up, just like the brakes on an old bigass 1-ton, it just feels too soft, but it doesnt go to the floor under its own weight

im asking if it goes to the floor when you push on the pedal.. what happens in a bypass situation is the brake fluid leaks past the seals on the inside of the master cylinder. thus causing a lack of brake preassure to be dispursed to your calipers

Are you using DOT 3 brake fluid?
Soft pedal can be a bad master, bad fluid or air still trapped somewhere in the system.
If your master is leaking a little it shouldn't affect it too much, but i would be concerned with it still.
A bad caliper will just give you uneven brake wear on the rotors.
