Default Water pump coupler

I was replacing the water pump on my 96 ws6 and accidentally lost the coupler that connects the driven gear to the water pump. Does anyone know if this only goes on one way? The reason I ask is that on end has a groove near the end of the shaft. I just need to know which way this is supposed to be installed.

I was told the groove goes toward the timing cover. Thats the way I have always done it and my water pump still turns.

Thanks, I have it on backwards and my water pump drive seal is now leaking horribly. Thanks for the info!

If you changed the seal, it is very easy to mess up and you might need to redo it.
