Default Ram air hood not made of fiberglass

I just bought a 94 formula and it has a ram air hood on it. But it is definately not fiberglass. I believe it's aluminum. I didn't even know they made ram air hoods that weren't fiberglass. It is not a functional hood but I have no idea what brand or what it's worth or anything like that.

Does anyone have any help determining what hood this is. I don't have pics to post up right now but it looks pretty similer to the ws6 style hoods. It also has a crease right down the middle of the hood as in it's not flat like the ws6 hoods. Thanks for the help.

Zach

Is their a problem with the hood? I can only assume you did some testing and determined it is metal yes? Okay wikapedia says try a magnet next lol. If it's aluminum it won't adhere

It could very well be the thing the British call "aluminium".

hit it with a hammer, if it cracks, its fiberglass, if it dents its either steel or aluminum. Then i would try to magnet to make sure.

Jeremy from Top Gear LOVES to call aluminum "aluminium" for some reason lol, I use the word when I want to be a sarcastic *** and make something metal sound classy and sophisticated

It's not fiberglass as I already stated. We have already tried a magnet that's why I said I thought it was aluminum. But that wasn't my question, my question was who makes hoods not out of fiberglass.

Oh and no there is not a problem with the hood, just kicking around the idea of selling it.

Some stainless is non-magnetic. Could still be steel.

When I was an undergrad in college, we used to watch old70's and 80's videos about manufacturing. They always said "Aluminium" too. Weird.

could have been custom fabbed in someone's shop. I still don't see why they wouldn't use fiberglass, but it's about the only possibility that I can think of. Every aftermarket hood company that I've looked at has used fiberglass.

Really guys?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium
Colour/color - hood/bonnet

Are none of you cultured?

To OP, maybe it was a custom one off? Sounds weird.

I've been working during the days so I haven't been able to get any pictures but I will. I highly doubt it will make it any easier to ID though. It's like I stated it looks very similer to a regular ram air hood just not made out of fiberglass.

Scratch some paint off it in a somewhat inconspicuous place.

I bought a genuine SLP Ultra Z hood from Zeke's in Quebec a few years ago. They took over all the SLP contracts/parts for GM for several years once the 4th gen's died.

If I remember correctly the dude up there told me my hood was not fiberglass either but "composite", like pressed powdered plastic or something. Pretty damn heavy too - I was suprised that it actually weighed the same if not more than my stock hood.

This is correct. It is called sheet molded composite - neither aluminum or fiberglass.

yeah my oem WS6 hood is SMC aka sheet moulded compound or composite. there is a metal frame inside it.
